You have to be WOT to reach peak torque. Just cruising around you're way down on actual torque output. So either car can be driven identically. It's just the .2 power may climb a little quicker when hitting the throttle, although there is a perceptible delay. At WOT driving, the character is far better in the .1 and there's no big loss of torque at high rpms. That isn't to say the .1 is quicker than the .2 because Porsche would never allow that. But this "more torque" argument is really misconstrued.

Drive a 991.2 w/PDK in normal mode with automatic shifts and you'll think you're driving a car with no power whatsoever. Same with top gear roll on at highway speeds. You want it to go fast you need to be in control of the gears and use lots of throttle (sounds like NA, doesn't it?).

My cars:
2017 Targa 4S
2016 GT4
A little exaggerated but mostly true.. and this can be said about the .1 too because it defintiely luggs around town if you drive it that way. 7th gear at 50mph it it sounds like it's breaking the car under slight throttle (when you're coasting/cruising lightly).

A stab of half a throttle or partial in a .2 will respond much better and stronger than a .1. Then again each .2 variant has it's own unique characteristic.

Boy that Dyson picture I posted a while back must have left a mark though you scolded me at the time!

A meet up is in the cards and I can honestly say that as of late I much prefer the deeper more authoritative burble of the NA V8 in the ///M.

Back on topic.

OP - have you driven and/or purchased either...or both?

The big difference in sound between the .1 and the .2 is the sound muffling of the Turbos. Replace the sound muffling factory cats with something more track oriented, and that goes away. With catless downpipes, the 3.0 TT sounds more like a loud NA 5.0 L with PSE on. That's what other Porsche guys tell me. I haven't heard one with 200 cell race cats too compare with mine, so i can't comment on them. But others say the 991.2 sound improvement is big with race cats.

I had 997.1TT manual with 480 hp and 460 torque or so, it was brutal fast, in facts it was scary fast for slow traffic on an island. I never get out of 3rd gear even on the fastest highway limits. I like high reviving my car and mostly driven in 2nd and 3rd gears with 3.5 to 5k rpm to get the rush of speed monster but always look back to see if any cops on my tail. I decided I want to try 991.1 NA 3.8 and it’s fast enough to pass people on the highway. Also the sport exhaust is glorious and addicting. I believe the newer 991.2 prolly better than previous 991.1, but don’t get into the hype of torque and power, drive the car that make you smile the most. Depends on where you live and how much usable power you can utilize before end up in jail, any 911 is enough power on the roads but options are more important to me nowadays.

Well, this sure prompted lots of feedback. I guess I did not search sufficiently so sorry to those that pointed that out. I do plan on driving both and researching appropriately. Thanks for all the feedback and taking the time to provide it.

I'm late to the party but here is my $.02. It really depends on what you want to do with the car (aesthetics aside). Is this a car you plan on keeping in the family, daily driving and/or weekend driving? Would you never want to mod or upgrade the car in anyway? Are you never going to take the car on the track? The 991.1 could be the perfect car- it is the last of the NA Carrera engines and similar to the last of the water cooled engines it may mean something someday. It sounds and drives lovely and aesthetically is almost identical to the 991.2 (at least to the non 911 owner). Are you interested in having a car platform that for an extra $2K you can jump into GTS/Turbo power via a Cobb Tune? Would you mod you car with different exhaust / cats (for around $10K including installation depending on the model 991.2 you can push into Turbo HP territory with a C2S 991.2). Do you want to track the car (on a small track like Buttonwillow my Targa 4 would keep up with the GT3 with all the lovely low RPM torque)? The 991.2 also improved on a lot of the basic in the 991 platform including aesthetics, carplay, etc. Personally IMO the 991.2 is the most versatile car Porsche has ever made in respects to being an amazing daily driver + track ready + easy to upgrade via mods. There really is no "right" answer but there is probably a better choice depending on what you want out of the car.

Thank you MDR911 for your thoughts. I would use the car as a daily driver and only drive about 5-6K miles a year. I would unlikely have the car tuned and be satisfied with stock performance. Since i am close to retirement, I am viewing this as a reward for working 40+ years. Very happy 997 owner today, but do appreciate the very nice improvements that Porsche has made to the 991. Would like to take advantage of PDK (have Tip now), improved ride and more. Regarding tracking... I know I would enjoy it but am tentative to take that on. Maybe someday in the future. I have done the Porsche driving experience in ATL with my son and certainly enjoyed pushing the car (at least someone else's tires and machine ).

just can't stand the rear of the 991.2 with that charbroil grill whereas i think the slats on the 991.1 is almost as nice as the back end of the 997. I have A 997.1 and will be test driving both in the near future and see if the turbo can me get over the feminine/japanese looking rear of the 991.2. just my opinion, that's all

Man, do opinions vary...the rear of my 991.2 with painted slats surely does not look feminine/japanese to me.

wow that is the one thing over all that I love about the .2 vs .1- the horizontal flat slats make it look dated while the thinner vertical slats are very reminiscent of the original grill of the 991-964 (want to see a “Japanese grill” go check out a Singer rear). Rear of the 991.2 Targa 4 for the win (well second place behind the GT3 Touring).

^^ Concur with Bob Z and mdr911. The .2's aesthetic updates are all quite nice and do make the .1 look more dated than just a mid cycle update. I could say the same about the 997.

I don't mind the 991.1 rear but the 991.2 grill has really grown on me. Now I cannot see the 991.1 without thinking of this:

(j/k! They both look great!)

Let’s be honest all the best 911s look like you can fry shrimp on the engine cover. Give me the hibachi all day! 991.2 for best modern 911 rear.

IMO 991.2 rear is pretty but odd one. Taillight doesn't match car's overall smooth shape. The vertical fin rear grill looks unnatural. Intercooler hole is not for Carrera that's for TURBO and it makes car look less clean. PSE tip configuration is weird at best. For me best rear of the modern water cooled 911 is 911R followed by 991.1 GTS.

I do like mine. Looks like a really nice feminine set of hips. Which by the way, I'm fairly attracted to.
