Default Consumer Reports 2017-2019 911 reliability is weak spot

Orange (|) rating is average and Green (^) is above average. 911 was average and cayman/boxster was barely above average (~60/100).

2017 911 56/100
2018 911 49/100
2019 911 53/100

Following trouble spots CR found with 911s:

1) engine cooling... I think this is due to water pump failures people have reported
2) transmission major... I think this is due to PDK lurching fixed by update
3) car electronics... I think this is due to apple carplay quirkiness fixed by update

I think overall rating is lower due to many other reports not included above. Reliability is significant lower than prior (.1 gen) years. BMW 2/4 series (doubt it...) and Lexus RC (believable) had top sports car reliability.

CR also found that cayman/boxster models were more reliable (61/100) and handled equal (or better) than 911's. 'Body integrity including rattles and seals' and car electronics was the worst part for cayman/boxster. Their test car was a 2019 C2S MT with few options and it was top rated in road tests (95/100) and noise/ride quality being the only downside. They didn't like all the buttons and apparently headlights aren't the brightest (I disagree...). Was surprised to read that apparently the 18 way seats are more constrictive/narrow so less comfortable. Cost/value was an obvious weak point and seems like maybe cayman/boxster is maybe a cheaper better car. BMW 2 series exceeded Porsche cars in pretty much all ratings and was their top pick (aside from 2018 year where reliability tanked then 2019 was similar to Porsche...2017 and older were really reliable apparently). BMW M2 had 98/100 on the road tests.

Kind of disappointing reliability rating after a few years. I personally already had a few warranty claims on my 2017 C4S, but it was nothing serious (quirks/ noises). Not sure how much stock I put into the rating though because my 2011 VW golf that was 'average' had very few failures 150k+ miles. Nonetheless, it seems like newer 911's aren't as reliable as 991.1 generation which had higher marks.

This is interesting , JD Power ranked Porsche #2 overall and the 911 as the best, most reliable, trouble free new car for 2018. For their 3 year old car study, the 911 ranked the highest.

Yea its really big discrepancy here. I tend to trust CR over JDpower though...

Best explanation I have as to why Porsche gets high marks on JDpower is because they are survey based and likely since 50% don't put many miles on their Porsche cars, results are skewed. Cars not driven much have no problems to report.

Bought an Audi based on Consumer Reports; ended up naming it “Hitler’s Revenge”. Never trusted them after that.

The 3 year report was for the 991.1. The latest report was for the 2018, #2 overall company and 911, #1 overall car.

Good points, my '09, (S) was solid, and so far the '17 base has been good (16 months in). I get on it, often, daily drive it, 12 months (no track days, yet) , and so far so good.

CR seems accurate in regards to touble areas, but I’m not sure how that translates to 50ish rating also considering many parts are from .1 generation which scored much higher. Logic says its the new powertrain and infotainment that’s dragging ratings down.

It can’t be just be leaky water pumps that's bringing the rating down...or can it?

I simply don’t trust the high BMW 2 reliable ratings. So many complaints about that car on forums.

The latest report that had the 911 as the #1 most dependable car (the first time that any car had been recognized as the most dependable car) was the 2019 vehicle dependability study, which looked at 2016 models (991.1).

https://www.jdpower.com/business/pre...ility-studyvds

The 2019 study measures problems in model year 2016 vehicles.
  • Most Dependable Model: The Porsche 911 is the highest-ranked model in the 2019 study. This is the first year that a Most Dependable Model has been awarded.

I am worried about the water pump. 4,300 miles on mine with no problems so far but am wondering if it is inevitable...

My 2017 991.2 C2s had the water pump replaced during a routine service. Later on it had a coolant leak that needed to be repaired. Neither problem left me stranded and both were under warranty. No other issues so far but less than 9K miles on the car. Plan to keep it long term. BTW there were a few other recalls done on the car but nothing major.

My first service is next month. Wonder what campaigns I will see for my car.

My car has not had any water pump/cooling system issues, but it has had a PDK valve body and two turbos replaced under warranty. 14xxx miles.

hmm. I just hope my '19 model is as reliable as my '15 m3 with 40k miles and no issues.
