Default Ebay airbag?

Hi All,
I'm looking to upgrade my 991.1 multi steering wheel to a 991.2 wheel.

I just purchased the wheel, and will be purchasing the module soon. I just found a few airbags on Ebay, but being a safety item and with old Takata airbags potentially being out there, I was curious if there was any way to look at serial numbers or manufacture dates to see if they were ok?

Anyone with any insight or first hand experience with this?

Thanks in advanced.

I'm very interested in this as well. I haven't purchased the wheel yet, but I hadn't even thought of the potential of getting one of the Takata's without even knowing it.

I am going to do the same upgrade and ordered my airbag from Sunset today. I checked ebay but I didn't feel comfortable purchasing it there.

If you got it from a dismantler like DC autmotive or Ladismantler you could run the VIN number of the donor car against the NHSTA database for recalls.

I've done the mod. Bought both the steering wheel and the airbag on eBay from two different sellers. Both units had Porsche part numbers and installed as the stock parts should. Porsche NEVER used Takata for their airbags!

I got my wheel from Sunset & airbag from Ebay. The first airbag I got was the correct style, but had the wrong connectors... they were yellow & teal, instead of yellow & brown. Seller tried to talk to me into modifying the teal connector... I declined & he sent me a different airbag with the correct connectors after a little waiting.

Don't order a used airbag.. Did the swap on a '13 C4S and they sent a macan airbag with a plastic textured finish.. It plugged right in sat inside the steering wheel but there was a noticeable gap around the perimeter of the airbag.

Ended up ordering a new airbag off suncoast. worked well.

Great point, I'm currently in a Macan loaner, and I noticed this morning how cheap the airbag looked.

Are the bags all interchangeable, just materials difference?

yeah pretty much all interchangeable 911, cayman, macan etc.

I'm not sure why there was a noticeable gap between the new 991.2 wheel and airbag.. You could see around the edge of the airbag and through into the steering wheel.

Be weary, the ebay sellers will list the item as a 911 part but it could be from something else which is what happened.

Suncoast sent the proper leather airbag but it was on back order for quite a while.

Best of luck to you.

Thanks, I'll need it. I'm pretty OCD, so trying to figure out if the $1k premium for nicer materials will be worth it.

Just to follow up on this, looks like they used Takata, but from what someone said, we weren't part of the recall: https://rennlist.com/forums/991/1093...stall-diy.html
