I was about to sign a sales agreement for a 997.1 C2S cab. But then I read the long sticky thread in 997 forum about bore scoring, especially in cold climates. I'm no longer interested, even a 997.2 CS would give me pause. I was planning on leaving it outside in a cold climate, though.

For that kind of price differential, I would go for the 991!

I agree with your sentiment: the 997.1 is not necessarily a better car than the 991.1. It will be slower and less agile. It will have more miles and be prone to more repairs vs the 991.

now, 997.2 GTS vs 991.1: that may be a different argument: the platform is newer, more reliable, and collectible (which plays into the value bit of the GTS being stronger than most 2012-2013 C2S, especially if a coupe and manual). The 991.1 is a better performer, but both are much better than any 993 C4S yet less expensive, so that argument goes out the window somewhat.

Back to the issue at hand though: the 997.1, if priced well, represents tremendous value. I saw a 2006 Cobalt 40k mile C2S, manual with sport seats sell for $38k last month. I wouldn't pay another 11 grand for the X51 kit however, as that gets you into 997.2 range (which makes as much power but features a more reliable engine and better "everything else"), and also pretty close to the 991, if that floats your boat.

997.2 and 991 share the same engine! I wouldn't sweat the bore scoring issue too much: how many of these cars have had issues so far? The 9A1 engine has been in production for over a decade, and a small amount of failure is to be expected on any engine. Heck, I have heard of Toyota 5VZ-FE engines requiring a rebuild at some point. If those things fail, even at a very low rate, then nothing is safe!

. I don't believe the 997.1 IMS is replaceable - although failures are lower with the revised bearing. I've read that the 997.1 engine has a different feel to the 997.2. I will say that the 997.1 is a blast to drive.

Do you want manual or PDK? I think that's a pretty basic distinction you need to make.

All things equal, the 997 is smaller and feels more tossable than the 991, IMO. I really like them.

I think the IMS stopped being replaceable in the 2006 and newer engines, but I could be wrong. I know 2005 was replaceable.

I agree; even though the 997 is heavier than the 991, it "feels" smaller. The 991 is so buttoned down and stable that it is a little tougher to get the car sideways!

IMS was killed off in 2009, so newer ones would be free from that issue. 991 is better in every way, more power, lighter, more refined styling(in/out), that’s a win with me.
