Preowned 991 Brakes - This look normal?
I am looking a 2013 base 991 with about 12,000 miles. I was about to place a deposit but then I noticed that the brake calipers look faded with rusty pins. The car was allegedly garaged but these pictures do not seem consistent with the car's mileage. Do these look normal for a 6 year old 991? I guess they can be removed and powder coated but at that point, it may be easier to just look for another car.

Wow. They do look very faded and I can understand your concern. How does the rest of the car present? Was the car ever used on a track? Could it be signs of high heat and track use causing the fade? |
Looks like a snow belt car with salt exposure. |
This seems to be common with the base 991 models. Ive personally seen it at dealers when I was looking for a 991, and Ive seen posts about these calipers aging quickly, versus the S models that have larger/painted calipers.

The rest of the car is very clean and consistent with the reported 12k miles. The car is in NYC area and could have been used in the winter but even that seems unlikely given that it's a 2013 with such low mileage. I was thinking that the owner may have made some poor wheel cleaner selections or run the car though automated car washes with harsh cleaners.
It's a cab so I suspect track usage is not likely. The look of the brakes is almost enough to make me STRECH the budget to the max for a 991S. |
If everything else on the car checks out, making improvements on the calipers are an easy fix. Go read the recent thread on painted calipers.
Check the DOT code date on those tires. May need replacement soon, regardless of low mileage. |
I would have it on the lift and inspect the suspension bolts. If they are crusty it’s from salt exposure. Seems like straight forward to remove them and get a more durable paint job. |
rotor looks like bad crack. ??

Those rotors look lipped at 12K miles as well - and they are rears. Have them measured. May be time for a brake job all around.

If the car is at a dealer (but from your post I doubt it) they might replace them in order to make the sale. If not, as I was saying in another caliper thread, Wheel Dynamics has a caliper repainting service that looks to be top-notch.
I also noticed you mentioning powder-coating. While for most things powder-coating is a good thing, the Wheel Dynamics site specifically calls out that they do NOT use powder coating because they experienced negative results with that. Instead they use a baked paint approach. |
they just look like someone used a harsh wheel cleaner on them. perfectly fine. I've powdercoated over 3000 sets of calipers, there are no adverse effects.
