Default 991.1s Self Immolation. advice needed.

Hello Guys,

My name is Jack and I am from Shanghai. My 991.1s is built in 2012/10. Total milage is 24000km. Yesterdady I attended a local track day event, was my first track experience. After arriving at the track, we had an hour long preparation and safety semiar, my car was parked aside and turn off. Then I got on track. After running one lap or two, my rear started flame smoke and soon turned into big flame. When I saw the flame from rear mirror, it was already too late. Sadly in less then 5 mins, my car was totally on fire. Luckily I only got some hair burnt.

The local small track is a mini one. Total Circuit length is 2km, max straight path is 400meter.

have called Porsche China customer service on yesterday afternoon, and it has been more then 36hrs, but no one has yet contacted me yet. In China most of the times it is hard for customers get treated fairly.

I recalled the event that in 2014 all the GT3s had the self immolation problem, and Porshce recalled all those machines and did a motor replacement. From my accident, the flame was so quick and many fellow drivers guessed there may be oil leak from the engine and caused the accident.

I have been reading posts on Rennlist for some time, as a newbie and not a pro on machines, I wish some one can share with me the exact problem for the GT3 so I may direct local investigation agency to check on that potential problem.

I hope you guys with more knowledge about 911 can help me out..Much appreciated!

Oh man, that's rough....total destruction. It's after-the-fact, but one should always carry a fire extinguisher in the car if doing track days....for the next car.

You'll probably get better answers on the GT3 forum:

very sorry about your car.

the issue i heard about was where the fuel line and a coolant line interfered with each other. affected cars were built between October 26, 2011 and January 24, 2012.

Glad to hear you’re okay!

You can get build date from the VIN - if it has one.

The 10th character in the vin number is the build year

A = 2010
B = 2011
C = 2012
D = 2013
E = 2014
F = 2015

My Vin is W*D*, D=2013, I just found my car dog plate it is manufactured in 2012-10. The recall for the fuel leakages fit for 2011/10-2012/1 911 carrera s. need to dig more to find some similar event.

that date range might just be for cars delivered to north america. it might be shifted one way or another for right-hand-drive cars or paint-to-sample cars or cars delivered to different regions.

What in the world was this guy supposed to do with a fire extinguisher?

This situation reminds me of the case with one of the early 991.1s where someone at the Tacoma, WA dealership left a shop rag in a customer's engine bay. When a fire starts in the engine compartment of a 911, you're done for the day. Get everyone out of the car / away from the car, grab your insurance card, and break out the marshmallows.
