For what it’s worth I just had the battery in my 2013 991 4S coupe with 25k miles replaced. Even under CPO warranty the new oem battery was ~$400, install and reprogram was $285 and with a basic oil change the total was ~$1,100. Zero covered under warranty.

That is just madness! NO freaking way I'd have paid that bill...there would have been a riot! Hell the oil change you're saying was almost $400 if my public math is correct! $400 battery was bad enough plus 2.5 hrs labor for what is reported by multiple people as a 20-30 min job and a questionable programming action? AND you say you also had the car under a CPO? Please do share which stealership/dealership was this? Where and when so we can all avoid it at all risk/means!

Is there a specific reason a dealer must replace a battery? Seems like anyone could do this...its under the front frunk cover and looks easy enough to remove. Costs 100-300 for the part depending on what you go with...good opportunity to get a light weight lithium ion.

I wouldn't think batteries are nornally covered by CPO, unless the battery itself is new and under warranty. Are they? That service bill seems kinda pricey but I wouldn't expect CPO to make a difference to any of that?

These cars are pretty darn stout and reliable, and most of us don't put that many miles on them... 5K a year for OP (depending on what kind of mileage the car had when he bought it). It's not much of a risk to self-insure.
