Default Freak accident or something to ask PCNA about

Out of the 25 years of working on cars, I have NEVER seen anything like this before.

Today I was working on my car doing an oil change (at 30k miles, a 2012.5 991S) I was going to swap the air filter as well with the 991 GT3 filter (aka BMC filter elements)

Upon removing the air box cover......I found this

Then I removed the filter and found this.....

The bottom of the air box cover that I removed

from the look for it, it seems like something got caught or sucked in from the airbox screen (second pict inside of the airbox) and caused the burn/fire. I honestly couldnt think of anything else since air goes in one direction and these are DFI engine (not carbs) so no gas is even near the throttle body....really couldnt think of any other cause and the car drives fine (no warning lights not nothing)

The only thing I recall was that I was driving one day back in Aug (when it was hot) and i remember I smell something burning, i got to the office and stopped and looked around while the engine was running and didnt see any oil or smoke coming from anywhere. I turned off the car and still no smoke or anything. So i was thinking is probably just something on the road or rubber etc.

Any idea? or have anyone hear of anything like this happening?

Wow! I'd think PCNA would want to know about it in case it is a problem that should lead to a recall or TSB. Amazing that it didn't result in an all-out engine fire!

Wow that is kind of scary. Probably would have kept burning if you hadn't stopped. First thing I thought is where is the cigarette butt. Please keep us posted. Glad it didn't grow bigger.

Ditto...I have been hit with hot butts while riding on the bike and they have landed on my cowl before so I guess it is possible, or maybe a stogie?

Yeah maybe hot ashes from a cig butt?

I do have CPO warranty, but i think they are most likely gonna call it a road hazard and waoulnt cover it. I will email my SA just to inform him.....

does anyone know what part is this? I am thinking is the crankcase vent tube or oil sep vent tube? Is plastic and is right behind the air box on the driver side. The plastic vent tube is slight melted...no holes or anything, just outta shape. So i am wondering what is it and does it need to be replaced

I don’t know what the system is on a 991.1, but is there a PCV feed near where the fire was? Could be excess oil that caught fire. I can’t see a cigarette butt getting into the intake let alone setting that big of a fire. I mean maybe if there were a bunch of leaves in there or something, but I see no evidence of that.

That is something burning from UNDER the intake and not something that came in through the filter. You need to have the car towed to Porsche.

I have never see anything like this. Could this possibly be an exhaust leak? The screen at the bottom of the airbox is located above the center muffler and left side connection. Perhaps a crack, clamp connection leak? Very strange.

Is there a heat shield missing from the center exhaust? (or a void in the shield).
