Jumping right into a 991? Or step up?
New here. Registered today because I signed my first contract as an attending. Once I get settled in practice in a bit I will finally get my P car. My question is would you stagger entrance into 911s or just go for what you want? I'm a specialist so its more of an appreciation/journey rather than strictly financially speaking (though 918, GT2RS are way out). I really think the 991.2 GTS is about the perfect combo of power and fun that I'd want. But should I buy a 997 and enjoy it? I'm sure theyre wonderful cars. I've had a tuned 335 and currently have a 69 Camaro 396 as my fun cars, but no dedicated sports car experience, though my father in law has a 986S that I enjoy. So to rephrase, what should my entry Porsche be? And since my camaro is manual and I plan to keep it till I die, PDK cars are totally in game.

And congratulations on your accomplishment. It must have been a struggle.

First of all congrats on signing your contract. One rule of thumb that permeates these forums is that you should buy the newest model you can afford. As you can see from my signature, I bought used and traded up until I could afford my goal car. there are so many variables that only you can answer where to start on the slippery slope of Porsche ownership. For example, do you want NA or turbo? Do you want hydraulic steering or electric? Being a new attending, probably means you won’t have a ton of free time, so you may want to stay with a newer model so you can just enjoy it instead of working on it.
Just my thoughts, good luck with whatever you choose and welcome to the club!

Buy the newest and best car that you find the most fun to drive. I highly recommend against starting with lower/older models just because you feel you "should". It'll just be a waste of money because it wasn't what you really wanted.

I say do research on models, options they come with (Confort, Performance), realize what you want in that car. Go to various dealerships looking for the combo of model and options you desire then test drive them from (T, S, GTS, Turbo, Turbo S, GT3) to see what you really want and feel comfortable with. Be it 997, 991.1, 991.2 or 992.

Med school debts paid? Mortgage paid? If you have kids, 529 started?
Is this just an aspirational 911 purchase ("look at me, I drive a new 911, I'm great!"), or an enthusiast purchase?
Have you considered a 987 Cayman S or 981 Cayman GTS, arguably a better (or at least as good) sports car with mid engine, especially if no back seat needed for kids?

Since you come from decent power cars a gt3 will likely not have the torque you are accustomed to. Either buy a gts and tune it or buy a turbo/turbo s model. Just my .02

Get whatever you want - you only live once. The .2 cars are spectacular. A GTS even more so. Unless you're going to track it heavily, I doubt a .2 GTS will disappoint in any way. More "usable" than a GT3 IMO.

I was thinking the same as you. I have always loved the 991 models, the first year they came out. Reminds me so much of the 993. My mind was made up to get a 991 S model, and preferably with the sport aero kit. I did kick the idea of getting a 991.2, but the idea of having a NA engine that revs out and sounds awesome, there's no replacing that feeling. Also, the power band is so nice in the 991. It's almost like it has three stages to it, and once you get to 6k, all the way to redline, the car pulls very hard and sounds incredible. To me, the 991.2 looks about the same inside and out. I don't like the nose on the 991.2 models, they aren't as aggressive as the 991.1 model, but I do like the rear lights and exhaust setup. Inside, the changes are minimal, hardly noticeable. Then, the engines. Sure the 991.2 S model is faster than the 991.1 S model, and the torque gives you the impression it's much faster than it is, but when you go back to the NA 991.1 S engine, to me, it was no choice, so I bought my 991.1 S and I'm more than happy that I did. I have no plans to get rid of it, unless it's for a good priced GT3 lol
Point is, go with what YOU like. Drive the 991.1 and 991.2 and gauge for yourself. You'll find that for daily driving, the 991.2 may be more fun around town than the 991.1, because of the low end torque available. I like loud cars, hence the reason I have a Hellcat, that car is obnoxiously loud, and i love it.
