From carplaylife.com:
The CarPlay compatible app update for Waze is rolling out to beta testers now, and although their Twitter account has mentioned that the public release will be available in a few weeks, they have yet to formally announce its release date. It looks more likely that the update will be available worldwide in October, giving beta testers around a month to iron out any issues found so far.

I used Google Maps via CarPlay to navigate yesterday which was really nice. I also have that ability through Porsche Connect so I can do Google Maps two different ways in my car. If only you could use Siri to input Google Maps destinations.

Maybe a dongle will come up, but apple doesn't play well with other kids

Tried out Google Maps this morning - works perfectly! VERY happy to have options now.

I got iOS 12 and noticed on my phone that it now shows Google Maps. Will have to check if GM is showing in CarPlay in my car.
How do we add things into CarPlay? Or will the iphone automatically make any app compatible with carplay visible unless we choose to remove them - sort of like apple watch interface?
Thanks in advance.

Wireless is not an impossible dream. In the PCM 4 case, using the native wifi network that comes with the head unit, this should possible (Pioneer, BMW).
Major issue would be Porsche doing anything without profit or calling it new (e.g. releasing a PCM 5 on a future car with a costly optional wifi carplay). I don't see Porsche releasing a software update to the PCM with new wireless capabilities. Given the connection already occurs with other vendors, Apple OCD doesn't seem to be an issue.
USB adapter is probably not the easy way, as BT is too slow for all that data and the wifi would need to bridge to the phone, leaving the phone without data feed (from the PCM hotspot in my case-MY17). I guess if the phone loses the wifi to be connected to the imaginary dongle, it could use LTE instead. Not easy, but feasible. Trick the head unit into thinking the dongle is the iphone, and they connect to each other via wifi bridge.
