I use a plastic 5 gal fuel container. When filled take it to an auto parts store or the local convenience trash/recycling center.

Never a problem.

I started to write “who keeps 9 GALLONS of used oil?” until the “I have 25 GALLONS of used oil” post above.

Must be me...

Yup do the same thing, fill up a 5 gal fuel container and take it to the Transfer station or Advanced Auto Parts. No problem.

In the old days, people poured old oil around slabs and foundations of homes and garages to repel termites. Nowadays, DIYers just take it to recycling stations.

Try an oil change place. I use a 5 gallon bucket and when full, take it to the local Valvoline. They are more than happy to dump it in their pit and return the bucket.

I remember my dad doing this. Maybe discouraging to termites, but probably not good for the landscaping.
