Default magnetic oil drain

Hey Guys,

have you guys ever used the magnetic for the oil drain plug, last time when I checked on the drain plug was a lightweight plug, no weight on the plug? Then I thought it has no function like collect shavings from the metals internally, would anyone recommend to use them on the P car?

if so, what size we are using on this p-car? I have attached the link of various size and type, if anyone has experience on them, please let me know. appreciated!

I use the one from L&N Engineering since 2014. Just bought a back-up plug last week, because the shop noted mine was getting a little worn after +12 oil changes. My Blackstone UOAs show the lowest wear metals I've ever seen posted for the 9A1 motor.

Default Magnetic Oil Plug

LexVan posted the use of the magnetic oil plug awhile back and I too decided to give it a try several months ago. I plan to submit an oil sample next oil change to Blackstone Labs as well.

It will fit your car:

Fits MY09 and later 9A1 DFI engines used in Boxster, Cayman, and 911 models, as well as MY97-08 M96 and M97 engines (see list below). Fits Cayenne S/Turbo MY03-06 models.

LexVan prompted me to get a magnetic plug too. Small investment with potentially high returns.

Only if over-torqued. The torque spec is a very low-low 19 ft.lbs.

I have an L&N Plug that I no longer use, the first $15 takes it, including shipping. PM's only.

How much of your engine is aluminum and non ferrous material vs ferrous material? With todays oil filters that really filters out very fine particles why do we need a magnetic oil plug? If it is that important shouldn't all high end cars have them? Is it really a cheap insurance policy...or just hype?
It would be nice to know if someone has a double blind prospective study to prove that it makes a difference in the longevity of Porsche engine.
IMHO..

I put one in because Jake Raby and Charles Navarro told me too. I don't need to know why. I just need to know Porsche people who are smarter than me.

I double-dog-dare you to show me a Blackstone UOA from an 9A1 motor with lower wear metals (Al, Iron, Lead, and Copper) than mine.

Great guys. Smart. But Porsche doesn’t say you need one? They don’t come with one! I think with the older M96//97 engines it is a good idea. 9A1, not so much! But it certainly doesn’t hurt either! Just my $.02

Why would someone take such a liability introducing a cheap aftermarket part to solve a non-existing issue. Just change your oil and filter as per manufacturer recommendation. If you are **** you can cut the oil and filter change in half.

Let’s say you take your car to the dealership and you remind the Service Advisor that you have change your drain plug for a magnetic one that requires only 19ft/lb. For some reason the message doesn’t get to the technician and he over torques it or cross thread it damaging the oil pan. Now the liability is on you for introducing an aftermarket part.

KISS (Keep it simple stupid).
