Default Targa mechanism reliability

Thinking about getting a 991 Targa GTS but wanted to know if there are enough data to assess whether the newer targa top are prone to any long term ownership issues? I sold my wife's Vantage convertible a few years back and now the baby is into toddler stage, she's been talking about an open top car...and if wife is talking about potentially getting a car, you gotta seize the moment lol

I can only attest for 8 months of ownership, but flawless so far! Using the open top more than my prior cab, which I attribute to the enclosed back seat area keeping the interior from getting super hot in the Texas sun. The Targa is more noisy overall than a cab with top open (coupe quiet with top closed) but for me not anywhere near enough of a negative to not own one. I'm loving mine.
Absolutely get her a Targa!

Love mine - no issues. Not that the car has that many miles on it yet, but the top has had its fair share of exercise.

Going on four years of ownership on my Targa 4S and not a single issue or hiccup besides a seal that dry rotted and was covered under warranty.

Thanks for the feedback! I know many 996 owners aren't happy with the targa roof creaking but seems like porsche fixed it with the 997s and perhaps perfected for the 991.

996's and 997's were not real Targas, in my opinion, and they had a completely different design. I'm on my second Targa in a little over 3 years and have not even once had any problem with the mechanism.

4 years with Targa 4. DD with 42,500 miles zero issues with top, or anything else. A well made car it seems.

3+ years with a Targa 4 GTS, not a daily. Only issue is that if the car sits without being on a trickle charger, the top will occasionally throw a fault as a function of the electrical drop. As long as you keep it on the trickle charger, no issue.

45k miles here. My top has creaked and squeaked from day one.

i am envious and sad when I read all these people who say it is coupe quiet when closed. I got an early model I guess.

No problems with the mech though.

When test driving a 17 last year it was very noisy and rattled a low speeds. Salesmen said it was due to cold weather, poor roads etc. It seemed worse than my 09 Targa I was trading in. Went with a Cab and never looked back. Much better experience overall! Doubt I'll never go back to a Targa. GL

An 09' Targa was anything but.

No issues with my (still pretty new) 2018 Targa. A real one.
