Battery Tender
OK...first question (more later).
I have a Porsche battery tender that I used on my 997.1....I don’t have the “smokers package”, where do I plug in the tender? There are 12V plug points in the glove box and the center console. I tried the center console and after about 30 min the tender was pretty warm. Just to be safe, I unplugged it and looked through the manual but didn’t find anything regarding charging via 12v point....so time to ask the experts! I assume the car comes programmed to allow charging via a 12v access?
Thanks in advance!

Plug into any socket and it will work. Note that it will usually take a long time to charge depending on the condition of the battery, but up to 12 hours or more is not unheard of. Even if the batter is has a decent charge in it, that can even take an hour or more. The tender getting hot means its working.

I do direct wire to the battery, quick disconnect fed under the frunk near the wipers. Mine is always on the tender unless I am driving. My charger plugs into the outlet on the roof of the garage, I have the charger suspended in the air up with the opener from the door opener supports the wire just dangles down over the windshield , it’s out of the way and I just clip the wire together when not in use.

Thanks for the clarification...my 997 never got that hot but I suspect since the car sat on a lot for 30 days the charge is down compared to what I’m used to seeing.
So on the tender tonight!

I went through this same problem when I went from 997.2 to 991.1 with it shutting off after 30 min. Here is what I found and it works every time.
Mine is is plugged into the outlet in the center console. If you plug it in after the car ignition has been off for a prior of time it will only work for 30 min or so. So it needs to be plugged in with in a few minutes of the ignition being on. Like right after you finish a drove plug it in. For some reason that keeps the connection open an it will not **** off.
I’m sure others will tell me this is a bad idea but this works 100% of the time as week.
- Turn car ignition to on...leave it on.
- Put the plug into the lighter while the tender is off.
- Turn tender on and let it power up and recognize the battery.
- Then turn car ignition off

Need Some Help
I just received a brand New Porsche Charge -0-mat Pro. I plugged it into cig lighter socket, then plug into the power source. The Power Lamp comes on Green. Then I touch Mode button and place to into the Normal Battery Program. The amber light comes on on the both the battery Indication Lamp and lower normal battery icon. The indication Lamp does not change stays amber. This on a 18 Targa GTS, I left in for about 30 minutes and no change, The charger feels pretty hot. Any suggestions/ advise . Thank you

I just plug my CTEK charger into the DC port in the center console and it works fine. My battery is six years old and the start/stop still works fine, even during the winter. Without CTEK, I expect that I would have already replaced my battery, especially given the small number of miles the car is driven each year.

When I look at battery tenders, the prices range from $20 to $200, but they all say they are good for maintaining 12V car batteries. Usually the cheaper ones have lesser amps, but does it make a difference how many amps it puts out, If you are using it to maintain a battery for a car that is not used for five months? Is there anything special about a Porsche 981 Boxster that would preclude it from using any old battery tender?

Baxter1949, I wouldn't hesitate to leave it on. If it's made for Porsche, it should be high quality, and I understand that they have automatic shut offs if something isn't right, at least mine does. Perhaps, someone with more expertise in this area could advise on this.

Since I was the OP I can close the loop. After the first charge with the tender and it getting pretty warm I haven’t had the issue since. Now it charges to green in about 4-5 hours. I don’t drive the 911 a lot, just on Friday and the weekend....unless it’s raining, or I travel for work greater than a week.
I figure about one more season and then it’s time to replace the battery as it will be 5 years from the manufacturing date.
