Default 991.2 Front Grill Screens

Like others, I have wished for external grill screens for the front intakes. This lead me to another DIY attempt. At this point I think I have a workable prototype, and a temporary mounting.

I started with one sheet (16 by 48 inches) of hex-style aluminum mesh (
Amazon Amazon
). This is fairly stiff, and powder-coated gloss black. It arrived like this:

The screen material is easy to cut with aviation shears.

I made a template to fit the intake opening in front of the black plastic opening.

After lots of trial and error, and accounting for a slight bulge in the screen (to provide clearance in front of the moving vanes), I ended up with a template for the side intakes, plus another for the center intake (on either side of the license plate).

Because the cut screen has unfinished (and sharp) edges, I also bought this black 3/8 inch edge trim with internal aluminum reinforcement (
Amazon Amazon
).

Ultimately I had grill screens that would fit reasonably precisely and look OK.

The shape and curvature is enough to hold the outer end in place, tucked inside the small scoop. I attatched the inner corner with some safety wire for now--once I have time to remove the bumper, I will find a better solution.

Here's the result, after a quick driving test.

Looks very nice for a prototype!
I've been thinking of doing something when my "T" arrives.
How does it mount? No issues when the shutters close?

Just today I was finally able to vacuum out a mixture of leaves, paper and stones from the air intakes. I really don't want to have to keep doing it as just touching the radiators with the tip of the vacuum's crevice tool is enough to deform the radiators a bit where the tool touches......and I was being very gentle and mindful of this as I know how delicate those surfaces are. I really want some grilles for my car!

Just curious, what front license plate mount did you use? My friendly neighborhood constable followed me home earlier this week and "suggested" that I need to have a front license plate in Texas. Have been looking at a few options, but yours looks the least obtrusive.

Well done. I made mine for my 991.1 with the same grill sheet I got on Amazon. Mine came with a choice of naked silver aluminum or black. I mounted from the back side and attached with 4 black zip ties. The zip ties to the horizontal slats and are virtually invisible.

Wow, that has never happened to me in my over 24 years in Texas!

I've never had a front plate. Ever. I got lucky, I guess.

For now, I looped some racer safety wire around some mounting tabs inside the black plastic frame/vane assembly. I want to find a better way but need to pull the bumper off.

I assume/hope that by leaving about 1/4 inch spacing between the back of the screen and the shutter vanes that they can still pivot withoug obstruction. When I get the bumper off, I might be able to energize the shutter system and check.

I made that last year. Check out the description: https://rennlist.com/forums/991/9861...e-bracket.html

Sorry to bump an old post, but I'm curious if you came up with a finished grill screen design?
I've been looking for inserts to protect my Carrera T, but prefer the simplicity of your idea.
Are you still using the grilles on your car?
Did you have to make any further modifications due to the moving slats or mounting wire?

Great write up, and great write up on your other thread regarding the front bumper removal.

Thank you, T

i want external grills SO badly. Also, what the hell do the little flipper louver deals do? they are attached to a servo which can be closed manually, gently.

I put Zunsport grills on my 991.2 Carrera and fit is pretty good and looks great. Can easily be removed and install took less than 10 min without removing bumper.
Slats remain functional
