Default "Chatter" from Retractable Rear Spoiler

Hello All. The retractable rear spoiler on my 2014 991.1 makes a lot of plasticky "chatter" when raised...particularly on hot days. Any tips for quieting this? I have already sprayed WD40 on the hinges of the lift mechanism, but the chatter continues from the seam between the top spoiler cover and the lower spoiler cover.

Check the two plastic plates under on the bumper under the spoiler. They must be removed for many types of service, and if the tabs have broken off they will rattle.

These 2 pieces ... one either side, under the spoiler. Careful as you remove them as the clips are fragile. Replacement cost, if clips are broken, is about $6 from the dealer.
I would also check all the screws under the spoiler for tightness including those that hold the rear lights in.

Torque specs and pages below are in the service manual.

^^^ Thank you.

The parts that seem to be "chattering" are #1 and #2 in the exploded view below (particularly the aft seam between the two parts) :

I'm dense. Are you suggesting tightening the screws to the torque spec to eliminate the lid chatter?

Sure enough. The tabs on both covers were broken. These weren't the primary source of the chattering, but they were rattling nevertheless. I added some BluTac and ordered new covers.

It's BS that a dealer would break the tabs while servicing the car and not replace the covers with new ones...particularly considering the car is under warranty.

The diagram on page 1273 indicates that the painted top of the wing is secured to the lower black.pastic part by 5 torx bolts along the top inside edge. Check these. If they are not tight, that may be the problem. If they are tight, then the problem may be how the lower and upper parts are connected at the very rear of the spoiler. The manual mentions a "fixing device". I would suggest removing the 5 torx bolts, carefully.separating the top from the bottom piece, and then looking to see if you can identify if there is a fixing device issue or any other reason for the chatter. Note that there is a parking brake light inside which could also be loose.

Glad it helped, sort of! It took me -years- to find that rattle.

I never took apart the upper spoiler because I am concerned about screwing it up. So the chatter remains. However the new covers are definitely quieter. Thanks again for all the help.
