Leaf Trap turns to Rust
Recently I was tightening the wheel bolts on LF when socket slipped off & my head dropped onto the fender, eyeglasses first. Got a nice little dent in the fender.
To see what is behind there in prep for Dent Eraser, I took off the rear fender liner. What were they thinking? TWO leaf traps in there. See photo.
This is a BAD DESIGN! It reminds me of the triangular leaf-catcher in the BMW 3.0 CS I once had. It had a triangular "catch basin" for leaves in the inside rear of the front fender well. When I bought one, I removed more than a bucket of composting wet leaves from those compartments. I then had to scrape out the rust and seal it before continuing with the restoration.
These two areas in the front fenders of 991's will lead to body rust in the future. What were Porsche designers thinking when they did this? Did they want to duplicate the CS's reputation as rust-prone?
I removed a handful of leaves from these two areas today. The leaves come in from the open area where the wiper blades sit. They then migrate to the sides where they work their way down into the section between the footwell and the fender. Just what we need—another place to clean.

Thanks for the head's up since I'll be daily driving my T year-round! I didn't think I had anything to worry about with modern cars, but I've started reading Total 911 and there's a guy with a 997 that has found new rusty bits in each of the last two issues, so I've been wondering if the 991 would have problem areas too.

First of all... Ouch! I'm trying to image hitting my face hard enough to dent a fender.
Second, it's amazing where leaves can end up. At least you didn't find a mouse nest in there!

Here is a photo of the right fender "leaf trap." I just removed the fender liner yesterday. Not as many leaves here as on the other side and again thankfully all dry.
