Coolant leak?

Back in October I took my 991.2 C2s in to the dealer to fix a squeak. They did that and during the process discovered a water pump leak and replaced the water pump. All good, but recently I have been smelling some coolant when I park in the garage. No leaks that I can see, but the coolant level was at min and took 800 ml to get it back to full with a cold engine. The car has around 1000 miles since the water pump replacement. Think I am going to schedule an appointment with the dealer to look into this coolant issue. Pretty frustrating!

Smelling coolant is not normal.

Adding 28 ounces of coolant to bring the bobber to the middle, is normal and not unusual.

Further investigation is necessary.

Also, a 1,000 miles should have been plenty of time to burn off any residual coolant on the car. But these cars do have a unique oder, especially when new, hot, after a spirited drive, parked in a garage. Are you familiar with this vs the sweet odor of coolant?

Yes I know the difference. I agree that after a long fast drive, the car just smells really hot. Different smell than coolant. Could be nothing or could be a small leak or seepage.

I fought a coolant leak on my .1 RS. Annoying as heck - took us forever to sort it out. Porsche kept claiming it was normal. While there is some evidence that is true, it still seemed excessive to me. Finally my indy fixed it with a new cap.

Moral of the story - good luck, it's not normal and you'll sort it out. Enjoy the car.

Going to the dealer this Thursday morning.

If I’m not mistaken this was a problem with the 997.1/,2. Seems like the cap was the culprit.

Is the engine compartment completely sealed so that you would not see a leak? Ive had issues with the coolant/overheating warning, but I know the car wasnt overheating because I'd barely driven anywhere yet when i got the warning. Porsche said they did a pressure test and said no leaks, how else can u tell?

It is hard to see much with the car on the ground. I doubt a pressure check would help as the car is running at the proper temp and not losing loads of coolant...unless the cap/pressure valve is defective. My guess would be that they will put the car on the lift, remove some covers, etc., and have a look for seepage. That is how they found the seeping water pump. They noticed it while looking for a squeak. I never have see any steam either. Just an abnormal coolant smell and some loss of coolant.

Took the car in this morning. Dealer called and coolant tank cap was leaking onto the exhaust, so they are going to replace the whole tank.

Ugh. No biggie but car was supposed to be ready on Friday but some bolt was seized so they had to order the part that the bolt was seized to. ETA now Monday afternoon. I'll take a wait and see attitude:) Also the garage is hella empty when the 911 isn't there.
