Pros / Cons of ceramic film on windshield
Not necessarily a dark tint and not for cosmetic reasons - just to keep the cabin cooler.
Anyone done it? Pros / cons?

Yes on all my cars.
Pros - keeps cabin cooler and no UV
Cons - paying for it?

I installed 3M Ceramic Tint, but would not do it again due to the cons below.
Pros
Cooler
Cons
When the windshield cracks, $500 to replace the ceramic tint (mine lasted 3 months before it cracked at a DE)
When the sun is at certain angles it can appear milky or hazy (no issues at night)

Good question. I thought the two, ceramic / nano, were interchangeable terms.
Not the case?

I wouldn't get the windshield tinted. Windshield already blocks UV, and I carry a sunshade for when I park. Side and back windows I may do - but am waiting for a verdict on installing w/ the lightweight glass on the T.
cheers!

From what I understand, they are manufactured on different machines using different technology. Ceramic used to be the highest performing tint until nano technology was introduced. I personally have Spectra Photosync 75% on my windshield and the overall cabin temperature difference is pretty amazing. If you think about it, having all of your smaller windows tinted and this 1 giant piece of the glass in the front with nothing on it, almost seems silly. The only drawback I've found is I can see a very faint rainbow effect along some of the perimeter ONLY when I wear polarized lenses. SO I went and bought cheaper sunglasses

I have 3M 70% crystalline all around, I wanted 90% on the windshield but they didn't carry it, it looks very clear though. I was on the fence about it but it does a lot to reduce SoCal heat beating on my chest this time of year.
I'll look out for the "milky" effect cited by phx991.

Con-could get the rainbow effect from polarized lens sunglasses.

I wore polarized sunglasses on a sunny drive to work today, in a SE direction, ie lots of angled and full on sun. Didn't see rainbows but I did sense possibly the milky effect mentioned without the sunglasses, I was particularly looking for it, flipping my glasses up and down.

Windshield glass blocks almost all UVA and UVB anyway. Adding a film to the windshield for UV protection isn't needed. The other windows are another matter.
It IS probably useful for Infrared blocking to reduce solar heating if that is a problem for you. In other words, look at the IR rejection numbers for windshield film instead of the UV numbers.
Here are some solid references regarding windshields and UV:

Also, ceramic tint does not interfere with electronics, that is a problem with metallic tints.

Agreed, StormRune. I thought it's pretty tricky to get UV through most anything unless you try hard, good links to prove me wrong. Never did a windshield before, it's all about heat blocking so if you don't live south then I wouldn't do the windshield.
