Default Third / Center Radiator Install

I installed a third/center radiator on my 991 yesterday. The radiator install with all of the shrouding and connections was easy. Removing the bumper is a pain in the -ss. Will report back on oil temperatures after my first track event this season, but it looks cool! Pun intended.

Wow. Impressive. Looks like a lot of work. Surprised you say it's easy.

removing the bumper was a pain only for two reasons. Two brackets that hold the bumper to the fender (probably why the fit and finish is so good) and two light connectors that are not easily accessible. Other than that and removing the headlights it’s just a bunch of screws. Fitting the radiator and hoses was not difficult at all.

I forgot to mention that I, accidentally, cracked my side marker lights by pulling them out the wrong way too much. I left them attached to the bumper so that they would come out with the front bumper, but did something wrong and forced them a certain way and cracked them. No big deal. Nothing that a new set of side markers cannot cure, but that I should point this out. A learning experience. in one DIY, they were left in which is what I did. I would recommend removing them.

Nice job doing the 3rd radiator kit! Did you consider installing the Rennline or other makes of radiator screen protectors while you had the bumper off? And FYI, the 3rd radiator will not have an effect on your oil temps at the track or off the track. I do think the engine and hence oil temp cools down faster but the max temp (coolant and oil) will be the same.

The clicks you are referring to that secure the bumper cover are a real PIA, I have removed the front cover on the 991 four times and I struggled with those clips each time. Great engineering but a real PIA.

Nice job. I installed the center radiator a few months ago. Did you use the vacuum method to refill the cooling system? I found I had to drive around a couple of times with the bleed valve open to purge the system. The first time I drove it I got a nasty warning on the dash. The temp gauge showed around 250 degrees. It was a false positive reading though. Probably reading the temperature of the air in the system.

The one thing I did notice after the install was that the temp gets up to operating temperature much faster than before and then stays at 194 degrees. It rarely, if ever, moves from 194.

I installed the Rennline screens at the same time.

Thanks! I considered it, but just didn’t order them. I don’t know why I didn’t. I should have. When I removed the bumper, I found a huge dead lizard, leaves and chunks of tire (probably from cars in front of me at track days) in the radiator ducts. things that would not have gotten in there if i had radiator screen protectors. I wasn’t sure whether a third radiator would have an effect on oil temperatures, but figured more coolant and an extra radiator couldn’t hurt. Need to switch from 0w-40 to 5w-50 before my next track event.

Agreed. Bumper seems a lot more sturdy and better integrated than my 996.

thank you for the pictures. I just got my center radiator kit from suncoast. Did your kit come with instructions? Mine did not and of course they are closed for the weekend. Would you be willing to post them or send them?

Thank you.

That's because the coolant temperature gauge is 'fixed' to read no higher than 194. It probably read the same before the radiator install, not that there's anything wrong with it.

Great write up. I’m considering adding the 3rd radiator kit as well.
Quick question - where does the outflow air from the 3rd radiator exit the car?
(The GT cars have an additional vent on top of the bumper. I’m curious where this kit is vented to.)
Thanks,
= Sanjeev

Would the third / center radiator could have a positive effect on the car if it’s just a daily driver ? I hit the track only once per year if lucky and just a few laps. 99% of the driving is in the city and highway and sometimes temperature can hit 95F.

no instructions came with the kit. I used a you tube video to learn how to remove the front bumper and the parts diagram to determine how to put the radiator parts and attachments together.
