Default If you had 'designed' the Carrera T...

Hi. I have a T on order and have read/watched lots of reviews. Many think that Porsche could have gone 'further' with the lightweight/stripped back theme. So if you had put together the specification for the Carrera T, what would you have included/stripped out?

Some possible thoughts:

* Remove motors/hardware for electric seats, windows and/or mirrors
* Better brakes as standard (from Carrera S?)
* Lighter weight roof and/or bonnet/hood
* Lightweight 19" wheels...?
* 6-speed manual box from GT4 or 991.2 GT3

Cheers!

I’d strip out the heavy, sound insulating turbos/intercooler/plumbing and include more cubic inches.

Ok, ok, sorry, had to. It was like Al Cowlings leaving a line open for O.J with a giant Bronco.

As you were.

The bonnet and roof make little difference in weight, same with the front fenders. Someone compared the R (carbon fiber) to the GT3 (aluminium same as 911 Carrera T) and I was shocked how little it was: 4kg for fenders and bonnet and 1kg for the magnesium roof. A carbon fiber roof is basically the same as magnesium (no weight savings listed for WP on GT2RS for the roof). Shaving weight off the front is also not where you need it on a 911.

Electric windows are actually lighter than manual winders now.

In the US seats have to be height adjustable now and the LWB seats are pretty light so I am not sure that would do much.

As much as I like the 19in wheels on the base, again, that is not much benefit and the fast tires are not available in those sizes. To save real weight you really need magnesium or carbon fiber $$$$.

All that being said, if I were in charge, I would have offered AC delete 11.2kg and a titanium or inconel exhaust which saves 4-5kg.

If we are honest, the 991 just can’t be made really lightweight. Every trick in the Porsche book on the lightest T (PCCB, LWB, base xenons, no other options) even with CF fenders, bonnet, roof, sway bars, no AC, no radio, delete the remaining sound deadening, ti exhaust, mag/cf wheels would still be over 3000lbs. To go under 3000lbs you would have to fit a lithium battery.

If you went all in and then took out the airbags, carpet, trim etc. maybe you could get it down under 2900. A lotus it is not.

+ I would change to add the larger front calipers / rotors from the S.
+ I would add a detuned 4.0 GT motor at 400 HP (In an alternate universe for sure)

Thats about it. As said above, no real way to make the 991 a superlightweight without looking at a CF monocoque - which isn't plausible.

Extra button (3 grams +) that allows driver to decide when to turn on rev matching on any driving mode. To go along with the 6-MT.

And get rid of the parking sensors and cruise control stalk ( a few grans -)

You don’t even need a button. Just configure it on the MFD.

It's a pretty great package the way it is. But if we are wishing...
  1. S brakes with the new, low-dust brake rotor coating from the Cayenne.
  2. Seat pinstripes and door release straps in silver as standard (leather interior with silver, red, or yellow pinstripes, straps, and seatbelts optional)
  3. PSE as an option to keep the price down or pay for the brake upgrade
  4. Offered in only five colors: Grand Prix White, Crystal Silver Metallic, Black Metallic, Guards Red, plus one more from the 1980s.
  5. The wheels above only, with rears for the narrow body, unpainted crests (1980s style), and all-silver spokes (body color spokes as an extra cost item).

S brakes should have been an option. Maybe paint the calipers gray to match the other accents.

Since they offer RAS they should also offer PDCC.

Rear seat delete should be an option with all seats.

We shouldnt be forced in alcantar steering wheel and shifter with LWB

Id MUCH prefer a six speed MT.

PDK should come with the same lower final drive as the MT and PTV as well.

I would have stripped out some of the sales propaganda Porsche used. The car is really not a lightweight geared down machine. In reality it lost very little weight (about 40KG) and the gear reduction is very slight and really not needed with such a high torque engine. Would have better served the Porsche customer for it to have been offered as options on the base or S. Instead of trying to deceive you into believing your getting a lightweight driver. Not saying it is not a nice car just saying I'm not falling for some misleading sales propaganda crap.

Echo the ability not to have alcantara steering wheel with LWBs.
Better angle adjustment for the LWBs
Closer gear ratios
PSE optional

Thanks for the responses, guys. Interesting stuff. Brakes from the Carrera S seem to be the most popular suggestion.

Not possible. Aside from turning off PSM, always on for sport and sport +. Happy to be proven wrong, though.
