Good point!

Even though I'd like to buy one of those 1965-1968 SWB cars one day. I think it is a 1 1/2" difference in wheelbase?

I'm hoping to join y'all on the 26th, and glad you're suggesting routes. I've yet to drive the mountains north of Atlanta. Should this tentative engagement be reposted in the regional forum as well?

You can post them anywhere:
1) Just saying but a Jeep will have a hard time keeping up with a real Porsche sports car.
2) We already nominated bittrl1000 as the event planner.

A Jeep or any other running car will work. We will wait for the slow stuff (especially a BMW).

Hwy 400 ends at Dahlonega,.You go straight on a County Rd. (not on the above map). You turn right to Cleveland. Just before Cleveland, there is a bypass to Helen, GA.

We go to Helen, GA. Go north here on Hwy 75 past Helen to the Uniciol Gap on Blue Mountain (it's harder then it looks). And back down the Gap (brakes just slow you down)..

And over to Hwy 180 to Brasstown Bald (the highest point in GA) but you'll be in the middle of Jack's Gap. Stay focused..

I say pick up Hwy 129 South to but watch out for Neels Gap. It's always slow in and fast out on any turn here or at Road Atlanta.

I'll repost the 26th in the Facebook group, but I can't lead this drive because I have to work that day.

So far, I have one other guy for a drive this Sunday morning. Anyone else interested? We usually meet off 400 exit 13 at a Starbucks, then drive up and around Vogel State Park. Usually about 3 hours round trip.

Default Atlanta cold and tires

Hey boys sorry I have been MIA for a bit but I wanted to chime in since I am also one of the Atlanta Face Book 911 guys. Regarding the Atlanta mountain drives, are there no concern with driving in the cold with Summer tires? Just curious since I can't imagine most of us in Atlanta would have winter or all seasons on our 911's. I had read somewhere summer tires pose safety risks when temps are below mid 40's. Is that not accurate? I haven't had my car out since first week in December due to consistent unusual cold/snow for 2 months now. Sorta been ignoring the board for that reason waiting for things to warm up so I can start using her again on the weekends. Also figured when temps are borderline in the city the mountains would be colder hence more risky.

Thoughts???

oh by the way definitely interested in joining on drives soon but weekends are my only available options besides holidays. Sadly I am still a working class guy who can't take skip days to hit the road. For some reason the office frowns upon that

Conventional wisdom: Don't take Max Performance tires out below 40 degrees.

My experience over many years of doing exactly that: I've not had any problems. One thing to be aware of is the tires have to heat up, summer or winter, before they are going to grip maximally. Needless to say, taking it easy at the beginning stages of a twisty mountain drive is always adviseable. As far as regular use of the car, I split DD duties between my Porsche on Sport Cup 2s (most extreme Michelin street tire) and another vehicle, and have been driving the Porsche all over Atlanta all winter, save days when snow is on the road.

Biggest concern today is sand on the road at the apexes, but I think it's been long enough since the snow that they won't be bad. At any rate, this won't be a 9/10s drive.

Cheers!
