Would you do it??

Keep the GTS. The GT3 is a TRACK car and will give you a decidedly stiffer ride, lower mileage, and higher insurance rates. Many go for the GT3 moniker because its faster, has more status (in some eyes) and boosts the ego. For practicality get the car that best suits your lifestyle. If you are not a track junkie and use your car for recreational purposes stick with the GTS......
1.) The GT3 has a stiffer ride - depending on what you drive. I found my ' 16 SPASM C2 to be stiffer than my '16 GT3. I drove both for 4 months before selling my C2.
2.) The difference in insurance rates are negligible as long as this is not your only insured vehicle.
3.) The GT3 is a road car that is track capable, not a TRACK car.
4.) Many go for the GT3 moniker because its faster, has more status (in some eyes) and boosts the ego. - Over 80% of GT3 are driven on the track. As one that frequents the track, I can tell you that the thing that boost's an ego is how fast you go around the circuit. I would argue that having a GT3 and not being the fastest in your run group is not very much of an ego boost (ask me how I know).
I do agree that
1.) It will deliver less miles per gallon/liter.
2.) It is not clear that the GT3 is faster than the GTS, if fact tests indicate the GTS is faster.
3.) one should get the car that best suits your lifestyle.

How long do you think you’ll keep it? How important is it to you that your wife loves the ride?
The warrantee difference is temporary, so to me it largely comes down to a choice between a Grand Touring car (the GTS) or something significantly harder.
The GT3’s likely to take more maintenance, but personally given the option I’d take the GT3 now (if I could get the wife on board). 10 years from now even more so, I suspect.

From my own experiences, when it comes to cars, mountain bikes & travel, going w/the emotional choice over the rational choice has always ended up being the good choice & has made me happy. Besides, if the GT3 ends up not being to your liking, can easily(?) trade it back in for a GTS. Have fun!

Tough choice. The objective performance should be nearly identical. So what will be more pleasurable (and for what uses)? The GT3 sound will be intoxicating for occasional special drives. The GTS will be much more comfortable, especially for longer drives. Plus it offers cruising with the top down.
And sounds like your wife and sons have different preferences. Choose wisely.

To O/P, I'd say drive them both and you'll know immediately which will put a bigger smile on your face, as well will hold a longer lasting positive effect on your driving experiences with it.

UPDATE. Thank you all for your input. I went against the majority however and followed my heart and bought the 2008 GT-3. The car passed its PPI with flying colors - zero over revs in all ranges was confirmed and no evidence of tracking. An added bonus is it has a Sherkwerks muffler. The car fits like a glove; the stick shift is just perfectly located and I love the short shifts. The acceleration is great and over 4000 rpm wow! 991 is a wonderful car and I'll certainly miss my GTS but after just one day I'm sure I made the right choice for me. My wife thinks I'm crazy to give up on the GTS; oh well, maybe I am. I'll post some pictures when I return home net week.

The right choice is what is best for you. Great you followed your heart.
I had a perfectly beautiful 991 4S that I had just finished several upgrades and the car was flawless. I had owned several Porsche TT cars and have missed the kick in the pants Power they provided. In one day on an off chance visit to the dealer for something insignificant I am now in a 991 TTS. Would have loved to have it be MT but everyday I’m in the car it puts a smile on my face. My wife thought I was insane as my 4S was perfect but it is your car in the end.
