2017 on dealer’s lot vs 2018 order
I’m new to this forum and will be buying my first Porsche soon. Facing a choice and looking for some advice to help me decide.
2018 C4S custom order ($137k MSRP) with 5% discount
vs
2017 C4S ($140k MSRP) that’s been on the dealer’s lot for 6+ months. It has about $2.5k of extra options that I don’t care for. I can likely get a 10% discount ( dealer offered 6.5% over the phone).
If I discount the extra options which are ~2%, then
the question is that whether 3% is a enough discount to account for the difference in resale between MY17 and MY18 down the line or should I aim for a higher discount?
Thanks in advance for your help!

If you look now at used cars - between MY14 and MY15 - you will think that MY15 is more appealing by 10-20% before you will look into anything else.

I'd compromise if the price difference was enough and the registration was 2018. I doubt I'd be able to find any car spec'd close enough to a personally spec'd car at near personally spec'd price, especially if the options are of little value to you

Wait, what happened to the rest of this thread? Or is this a new one? I swore I just answered this same question last week..,

For such an expensive car, I would order a car with the options I want. What I did for my 2018 C4S. And I got 6% off MSRP although I did trade in a 13 Boxster S.

I've been trying to get a 2018 build for a GTS and its been like pulling teeth with dealers around the bay area... Would you mind pming the dealer you're dealing with for the 2018 custom order with discount?

Economically, I think it comes down to how long you plan to keep the car. Assuming comparable depreciation, you'll be owning a model year older vehicle if you go with the '17. If you plan to unload the car in 3-4 years, you are far better off with a newer vehicle. If you plan to keep it a lot longer, the price difference should be 10% on top of the discount you'd get on the '18 to make it more apples to apples. Either way, you are about to purchase a tremendous car, so enjoy the ride :-)

I compromised on every lot car I bought and always wished I ordered one, only to buy another lot car. Finally I bit the bullet and went through the car options dance and got a car nailed down exactly like I wanted. No regrets. When you're spending this kind of cash, get what you want and don't compromise on the really important things you desire in a car. If I had followed my own advice a few years ago I'd be money ahead as I aways tired of the car with compromises.
