Spoiler operation - differs in 991.2 vs. 991.1
 

Hey gang - 2 weeks ago I replaced the wife's DD from a 2015 C4 to a 2018 C4S. Following behind, I noticed that the spoiler was up at 30-40mph - so I called her to ask if she pressed it or if perhaps the button light was on. No on both. As note, it went back down when she slowed lower than 30.

Question is this...in our previous 2 991.1's, the spoiler was up at about 70mph, down at 55'ish.

Is the 991.2 operability programmed differently? If no, we may need a trip to the dealer for service.



As an aside - know this is hotly contested, but I'm solidly on the side of the .2's. Useable power in the low RPM range makes the car much more lively to drive. Also, for those on the option fence...buy the RWS. Makes the car drive smaller than it is at low speed.

I heard somewhere the spoiler will go up if additional cooling is required - perhaps that's why the 991.2 will sometimes have the spoiler up at slower speeds?

In my 991.1 it only raises at 75mph.

Happening when car is dead-cold. Water and oil not up to normal op temp.

I have a 981 Boxster S. Spoiler goes up at 75mph and down at 50mph which is similar to a 991.1.

I also have a 991.2 C4. Spoiler goes up at 78mph and down at 36mph. It has been very consistent. So if your spoiler was up, then it is going to stay up even into the 30s.

I have not noticed my spoiler going up for additional cooling but I have heard on rennlist other guys who are experiencing this phenomena with the .2.

I've had mine go up at low speeds as well, but this was in Phoenix when it was around 110° out.

The spoiler doesn't go up to cool the engine, but to direct more air to the intercoolers, if intake temperature seems high. The engine's water is cooled by the front-mounted radiators and the oil is cooled by an oil/water heat exchanger, so the spoiler would have no effect on either fluid.

I can confirm OP, I have noticed this in base 991.2

No issue! Besides, its much cooler to have that spoiler up more often. No pun intended ;)

My 991.2 turbo spoiler goes up at 80 and down at 50. Must vary by model. I have the aerokit as well.

My 2015 cayman GTS went up at 76 and down at 50. My 991.2 GTS seems to go up at around 40 - but not always. Seems to be linked to how quickly I get the car there. Goes down at 30.

Does anyone know if the speed thresholds for spoiler activation can be dealer-programmed to different MPH? I've seen threads on here where people add a fixed wing or duck and have to "trick" their car into thinking it's another model (one without a movable wing, etc.), but not actually manipulating the speeds. Is there just a menu in the dealer computer and you pick what car you wants yours to behave like? And is the menu hard-coded into the car and only present you with other Porsche models available/offered in your car's specific model year, or are the menus virtually loaded in the dealer's handheld device (so it would allow one to program a 2015 car into thinking it's a different 2017 one, at least as far as spoiler operation goes)?

I have a 2017 with about 3,200 miles. It would go up at 75-80 mph. Now the spoiler does not work at all (no response from driving at high speeds or by pressing the button) and I will have to take it to the dealer I suppose.

The advantages of the turbo car is not having to shift as much in traffic (because of the lower torque and power range), the clutch is much less work than my '13s was, the power steering plus is really nice, the lane change assist is nice, and the touch screen for my music is better.

Overall, the new 911 is a much better city driving car. It has more power throughout the range. (my new car is a base model) but the thrill that the na car provides in the 3,500 to 4,000 rpm is gone.

I have also read that there is a cooling assistance feature of the 991.2 spoiler. In my experience in the MY17 C4S, the spoiler deploys at seemingly random times under 75MPH but only on very hot TX days, and/or during very spirited drives. Seems to add up to a cooling assistance feature of some kind.

I think my '17 C4S does the same. This summer when the temp hit 99 one day I noticed the spoiler had risen and remained so even after I parked the car, turned off the ignition and exited. It did not go down even when I pressed the spoiler button. I went into the store and when I came back out 20 min later however, it had gone down, so it seems to work for "cooling" even when the engine is off.

Is there any literature on what technical speeds these spoilers go up at?

Do spoilers on 991.1's definitely go up at a certain speed? Haven't noticed that on my car yet.

It is in your manual. Page 170. This is pretty close for your 991.1 based on personal experience.

For the 991.2, the manual documentation is below (Page 223). It is not accurate based on personal observations. Mine goes up at 78 mph and goes down at 36 mph. This is based on 20+ observations. Others have posted that the spoiler goes up when the engine gets very hot. My personal opinion is that the 991.2 manual is a lazy cut and paste from the 991.1. manual and that is why it is not accurate.
