Regarding the exhaust noise on the GTS, I have a 2015 and think it sounds great. In sports mode the pops and crackles may well be created but they sound plausible.
The noise of the GTS overall is well guaged IMO. It’s loud enough to sound sporty and interesting but not too obnoxious

When I first got mine, one of the items on my list for improvements was an exhaust system, but now I don’t think I need one.
While the exhaust gets my neighbors attention, it’s not overwhelmingly loud; that said, my car starts up in sports mode automatically which turns on the exhaust.
Performance wise it’s a spirited daily driver, not going to justify it on less weight/more Hp.

Hi yes, the higher the rpm lift off the more noise and seemingly random crackles, in lower rpm still a few around. Doesn't sound too synthetic. Not sure how they do it, probably small over fuelling.
Years ago mapping with motec I did add a little extra fuel under certain conditions (like high rpm low throttle position) this provided the much approved pops and bangs, not sure this would be eco friendly nowadays
