NA Exhaust Notes
2 Questions for the crew here: 1) If you had to guess as to how long the "gurgle" is, when letting off the gas at mid-range (let's say at 4k rpm).... how many SECONDS would you say it is?
I ask, because when driving the newer bi-turbo GTS, it is a very consistent 1 second, and always sounds exactly the same. Same # of crackles / pops every time.
It can be repeated over and over again by lunging forward on the gas a bit, then back off again,... rinse repeat. same sound every time.
Something tells me that the NA engines do not have that "built-in" back-pressure gurgle that Porsche has built in to the new bi-turbos. BUT something else ALSO tells me that the NA crackle is not as pronounced, as it is in the bi-turbo engines either.
So the follow-on question #2) ... if you have ever had the opportunity to drive & compare BOTH,... how loud is one compared to the other?
.... I've spent waaaay too many hours on Youtube trying to find those exact sound clips to compare. Not easy to do using other people's sound capture bytes.
{... my current opinions expressed above come from only having driven a new 2017 bi-turbo GTS for 3 days in Germany last year,... verses only a short 15min test-drive in a '16 NA GTS a few months ago}
TIA,
=Steve

I can say that I hadn't noticed it being as regimented as you seem to find the biturbo. I can't compare directly though

Thnx Carrera2RS. ... by "regimented" I'm assuming you are referring to the bi-turbo GTS consistent crackle/pop sounds (as short of time that they occur).... and yes that is what I heard over the course of 3 days driving it.
if I can paraphrase you... (and assuming you have a NA GTS as most do here),... it sounds like you are saying that the sounds you hear are random crackle/pops,.. sort of long & short crackle/pops that have no consistent cadence. Yes, that is what I heard in the 15 minutes I got to test drive a 2016 NA GTS. I also noticed that they were not as pronounced (eg "loud"), as the bi-turbo GTS. .... and that was even with the PSE turned ON.
With PSE turned off, it was almost non-existent.
Let me also add a related experience,... that with my 1991 964 Turbo,... when I'm drifting down a long stretch of slightly DOWN SLOPE road at a speed of approximately 30-35 mph,... both in my 2nd gear, or 3rd gear OFF throttle,.. the "Gurgle" is AS LONG as I continue to drift. It can last minutes if I want it to. It is a GLORIOUS sound. I really love it. It can also be especially pleasing when traveling in the city streets and have bldgs on either side to amplify that sound,.. or even with Jersey walls on either side of the car,.. the sound echos right through the window and into my ears. love it.
I Love it almost as much as a I do when I am WOT in a over-boost situation and my wastegate opens to dump the excess induction pressure (which, with wastegate open, it is essentially a direct dump of exhaust out of the driver side tip, and it gets LOUD).
Anyway,... as you can tell, exhaust sound is a big part of the driving experience for me. And thus I'm trying to understand the 3.8 GTS (powerkit) PSE sound, in both NA & bi-turbo comparisons.
Thanks again,
Btw, Love your pics too Carrera2RS

brings back memories, I remember adding fuel using Motec when throttle was zero and revs high on my 964RS worst thing I did was sell that car !!!
Regarding the exhaust noise on the GTS, I have a 2015 and think it sounds great. In sports mode the pops and crackles may well be created but they sound plausible.
The noise of the GTS overall is well guaged IMO. It’s loud enough to sound sporty and interesting but not too obnoxious

991.2 GTS - The sound a baby makes as it blows gas bubbles out of its mouth, prior to explosive evacuation.
991.1 GTS - The sound Zeus makes when he’s very, very pleased.
Too soon ?
