Coming from a guy shopping for his first Porsche, how true is this statement in general?

For a guy shopping for his first Porsche - the world is your Oyster! You cant go wrong, base model is exceptional and it just gets better from there...

Depends.

Some love the free revving 3.4 on the #1 cars. Others Like the added power of the 3.8.

On the #2 cars the base has a lot more low end than the #1 S's. The #2 cars are considerably faster with much more low & mid range that the S model has less difference in terms of power that you will notice on a regular basis

In addition to power there are a myriad of included and other options on the S as well such as suspension, brakes, diff, etc. Some care and some testify that it detracts from the 911 fun.

In 991.1 land the base often comes w/o PASM, I'd want one with it if I weren't getting the S.

You’re my kind of madman. Congrats on (imho) the right final outcome.

Congrats. I too could have gone with a 991.2 but chose the 991.1 based on classic Porsche attributes. If I had done the 3 car progression you did, I would not be typing this. I would have been a victim of a spousal homicide.

Great post. I love my 2014 S which I ordered new to my perfect spec. But I find myself wondering about "needing" something newer and faster with CarPlay, a longer warranty, etc. But I can't seem to pull the trigger.

You have reminded me why. Thanks!

I got my first (991.2) last Christmas ( I had been a very good boy) and absolutely love it. Didnt get the S and if I were ordering another one today I'm not sure that I would. These things are really fast/quick for everyday driving in the city and hwy. If I was tracking it I would probably go S. Same goes for PASM ,, rear wheel steering etc. Not sure there is any benefit on a daily driver. I wonder if I will feel the same in a couple of years..................I really like the new GT3................

I have found your journey very interesting reading, I have 991.1 GTS and have been considering the 991.2 GTS. I totally enjoy the drive and sound of the 991.1 and deliberating weather the added speed of the 991.2 will make for a better experience of my current 991.1...

Thanks for reading.
I sure hope you never have the opportunity to drive a 991.1 GT car. There is no sound better than that of an NA @ 9000 rpm.

To what end? You'll soon get used to the new "added speed" and then what? If that's your end game - you just need to get a TURBO now No shame in that by the way (or a #2 car) Either will get you more low end power but #1/#2/Turbo all have very different characteristics and neither the #2 or Turbo can give you the character of your GTS.

congrats on recognizing the "mistake" and going after what you wanted ... must be great to have such an understanding spouse.... not sure mine would have been all that happy -- and I 'm sure i would have been hearing about it for the next 50 years...

R_Rated..... and your point is exactly why I’m still with the 991.1, the power of the 991.2 and TURBO is intoxicating, but the linear delivery and scream of the engine all the way to the red line in the NA is wonderful (for my own driving experience) and feel reluctant to let go 😃

I had a 2015 base Carrera and my envy was AWD, not the extra HP. I found a low mileage 2014 CPO C4 and have been ecstatic every since.

Now, don't get me started on my CPO .1 turbo S dreams. An upgrade to my upgrade? Jeez. I guess I am on board.

Oh, it never stops.
