The techs wound up burning a lot of unexpected time troubleshooting a DME update failure when they were coding it for X51. And they couldn't roll it back to original, either. After lots of back and forth sending videos of the issue to Porsche tech support they eventually replaced the DME to get it to work, but I wasn't asked to pay for that labor - or that new part. I was out of town at the time and had dropped off the car for the upgrade, so it didn't impact me at all.
Was this the price for a 991.1? At Porsche Bellevue?

It was for my 991.2 and, yes, Porsche Bellevue did the work.

Also - The Kit on the #1 and #2 cars requires SC, correct?

Yes. PSE is required as well which of course can be retrofitted.

I thought so.

I've seen people; who participate here regularly, without SC and without a front/center radiator[991.1] claim to have the X51 kit. It's amazing that someone would claim to drop close to 15K on this kit and have a story about skipping the center radiator - which is <$600.... and lack the dash clock included with SC.

Just curious, with an X51 power kit, will you get higher power in higher revs but at the expense of more turbo lag from low revs? Is that lag very noticeable vs stock on a C2S?

If I remember correctly, Nick Murray commented in one of his Youtube videos that for the least turbo lag, better get the base Carrera as it gets worse from S to GTS.

Please correct me if I'm mistaken. Thanks!

I'm no Nick Murray when it comes to performance driving, but I can tell you I just traded my .1 S for a .2 S and I don't feel any turbo lag. I've previously had a 924 Turbo and a VW Golf Turbo. And I'm here to tell you the .2 911 S lag is so tiny compared to those cars that it's virtually zero as far as I'm concerned.

The small amount of lag is even further reduced if you are in Sport Plus mode (typically manually shifting) or if the car senses you are driving the car hard in other modes. Porsche describes the trick they use for this in this excerpt below. You can actually see the effect of this on the boost gauge.

You can actually hear this mode, with the engine making some nice noises (best described as a mechanical whine) while the throttle is closed. Keeps the pot boiling while you ponder your next corner.

Not sure how y'all drive most of the time, but even with my new 991.2 PDK C2S, I like to keep my engine on sizzle. No cruising around at 1300 rpm for me. I'm always in either Sport+ or Manual. I like to cruise in the 2800-3800 rpm range around the fast boulevards in the burbs where we frequent. Even on interstates and expressways i enjoy driving in 5th gear under 80 mph. When i look at these torque curves for the S versus the GTS, there is a huge difference between these two torque curves at 2200+ rpm. The X51 Power Kit engine has get up and go in my normal driving, vs the standard S engine.

I had almost 9k on the odometer when I bought the X51 kit. I was pretty familiar with the response in normal/sport/sport+ by then. I babied the new turbos for 300 (okay almost 300) miles before I drove it hard and let the boost spool up. I immediately noticed a change in throttle response - no science here, just a sense of a bit more lag to get the boost up and less torque than before until well into the 2k range. Above that it pulls noticeably harder. That’s the tradeoff I expected, of course.

Now I am over 15k on the clock so that’s 6k+ on the bigger turbos. Driving around town is better now because it’s less torquey down low and I don’t spin the tires as much on the wet roads around here. In sport+ it is even better than before because there’s always been a wee bit of boost on tap and it is responsive enough that there’s no shortage of smiles when the revs climb.

digits, did you notice any change in exhaust sound? A turbo acts as a bit of a muffler. So logic would imply that a larger turbo might allow slightly more exhaust sound and slightly different note if bigger in diameter. Just curious...

Okay. This is rennlist. Topic is 991.2 exhaust. Doesn’t seem like you’re trolling, though so I’m gonna take the chance and answer

I hadn’t given it a thought until you just asked, and no, I haven’t noticed any change in the exhaust note - but I had X51 installed in December and didn’t do much driving with the windows down in the winter so it’s been too long to really compare. I never hear my own car from outside since no one drives it (in a spirited way) but me. The sound inside the cabin has never been great (those sound intake ports seem to drone IMO). I do enjoy the sound of sport+ at higher RPM when I have the windows down. Overall it seems to sound about the same as I recall pre X-51.
