Tutorial: DIY install Apple Car-play on old model of 991s ( with PCM 3.1)
This is my first tutorial I have ever written, so if there is any part missing or not clear, please let me know. I will try my best to guide you install the Apple Car-play with the PCM 3.1 system.
Anyway here is the before/after pictures of my 2016 991 C4S. I have used it for about one week and it is compatible with all the factory functions (GPS, Maps, Radios and Back Cameras). The most important part is, this system is not required any other third part screen to be installed, it just looks like the factory Apple Carplay from Porsche. So far I am pretty happy with this DIY modification.
Before:
After:
Now let's start the tutorial:
Step 1: Before any installation, make sure the PCM on your Porsche is 3.1 . Since the system I bought is only support this version.
Ideally, the PCM 4.0 version should have the Apple CarPlay enabled, if not, contact with your dealer, they might able to enable that for you.
Step 2: Then we need the hardware, which includes a motherboard, couple cables, and an Apple CarPlay module. This might be the hardest part of the whole process, since the hardware is made in China, and need be shipped from there. I got the whole set about $524 (3280rmb, around $499 + $25 shipping). Also, we nee some panel tools. here is the set I got ( )
Step 3: Okay, now it is the construction time. First of all, we need to take off the panels, take the PCM out. I followed this tutorial to get my PCM out of the car (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLZV...ature=youtu.be)
Remember, before you unplug all these cables, take some pictures first. So you can remember which one is which since these cables are similar
Step 4: Now, we need open the PCM. There are 5 screws on the PCM box, see the attached picture. After you unscrewed them, use your screwdriver to unplug the locks on each side. Then follow the arrow direction to open the box. The PCM box is super tight... just be patient and gentle. Don't damage anything.
Step 5: After opening the PCM, we need to take off the SIRIUS board. Important, this will let your vehicle has no SIRIUS function anymore if you are a big fan of SIRIUS and subscribed to their service (ONLY $50 for three months, it is almost free!). You can skip this tutorial. For the others that don't give a SXXX of SIRIUS (like me) just follower the attached picture to remove the board. This won't affects any other services like GPS and maps, you can still use them.
Step 6: After removing the SIRIUS board, please follow this tutorial video to install the Apple Carplay kit. The Chinese seller sent this to me and I just uploaded it to Youtube.
Step7: If everything goes well, we have finished the hardest part. Now we need to put the PCM back. Please use the follow reference to connect the Apple CarPlay kit to the right cable
This is important, make sure you plug this, otherwise you won't have any sound.
Step 8: Before put your PCM back, I will recommend testing everything work first. Since space is very tight, it will be very hard to get the PCM out of your car again. See the below photos as space arrangement reference.
And this is all, the seller told me it will be 3 hours work. but I actually spend about 8 hours on this.....but I have Apple Carplay now!!! Enjoy!

Four Questions.
1. Once you were done did you backup camera still work.
2. Did you get the kit from LsailT on aliexpress.com.
3. Did you say you had to remove the satellite radio?
4. How did you active voice command for your phone?

Great write up so far. Interested to see the rest. Awesome!
For those sweating the loss of Sirius XM, Sirius finally added CarPlay to their app, so you could probably just use that and it should cost you less.

I'm interested to hear how it turned out and how stable it is. I know of other makes using a Lsailt box with mixed results. Here's a video of the Lsait box on a PCM 3.1 that I was able to find:

Nice write-up, but you lost me at Step 3, followed by "now open your PCM"...
I'll keep the 3.1 as an incentive to get a new car.

2. No, I am not using the kit from aliexpress.com. I purchased from Taobao, I think they can ship to the US via DHL. Let me know if you need the help of making an order there.
3. Yes, I have to, since it requires to install a small chipboard inside of the box. Without removing the satellite radio chip, there is no room there. After installation, everything works except the satellite radio. (Actually, you wont see the satellite option form the console anymore.)
4. Check the photos I attached in the tutorial. There is a Siri cable in the package, the cable has a small microphone, which is used to activate your voice command.
Hope this is helpful, I will finish my tutorial ASAP. Sorry about that

So with this setup you are able to use CarPlay as normal? i.e you can touch and swipe on the PCM to interact with the CarPlay screen?
And are you able to use the **** on the lower right hand side to select and click on UI elements?
