Lit cigarette, gas tank leads to Porsche fire:
ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) - A Porsche went up in flames on Interstate 275 on Tuesday night.
Florida Highway Patrol said the driver was traveling on I-275 near 38th Avenue in St. Petersburg. The driver was carrying a gas tank in the passenger seat and lit a cigarette. That’s when the fire started.
FHP shared a photo of the scorched car covered in fire extinguisher foam, and still smoldering from the blaze.
The driver, who was not identified, escaped uninjured, but the Porsche did not.

What an idiot. I think there should be a fine of like $100k+ for anyone caught throwing a lit cigarette out the window or on the sidewalk or whatever. They could help pay for all the fires they start.

Ouch! Glad he escaped uninjured.
Cant imagine a point in my life where I would actually drive a 911 to carry a gas tank! Dont even like carrying a tank in my truck.

If smoking that do that to a Porsche, think what it is doing to your lungs.

You do know we had a hurricane roll through here. There was zero gas to be found in the area. He probably had a generator running and needed to fuel it. 1/2 million without power.

That said, my gas container doesn't scare me that much. It's plastic, and thus doesn't suffer from corrosion issues, and I take care to seal it well. Gasoline does give off fumes, but with a small, well sealed container and a short trip, my main concern would be a collision. That would be bad.
I don't smoke, but if I did, I sure wouldn't light a cigarette with it in the car.

Oh Florida man, what will you do next.

Insurance company gonna love that one. Unfortunately for them, being stupid is not excluded. Before you say they won't pay, they will. Ive seen the craziest of claims. We all do stupid things but this one is at the top.

What does the statement that I would not carry gas in my nice car have anything to do with the hurricane and this guy?

I can understand that in a pinch, he had to transport gasoline in his 718. But why not put it in the frunk? First mistake. (I'm sure it would fit?)
Then he allowed the gasoline to spill in the interior (didn't tighten the cap, or drove to hard and knocked the tank over) - Second mistake.
lighting a match in the car filled with gasoline vapor? Third mistake.
However, I think it is pretty cool that a 70 year old man bought a 718. That is awesome so it negates the three mistakes above.
