My tail light fell out!
So, last night I was driving and I pull up to a stop light and a guy in a work van next to me signals, roll the window down. He then proceeds to tell me "you light is off." I pulled over thinking it was just a bad bulb and to my surprise I find the entire passenger side tail light hanging by the wire off the back of the car! I then just unplugged the light and took it home with me.
Anyway it looks like the plastic on the light cracked somehow and now I need a new light.
Couple of questions:
1.) anyone else experience something like this?
2.) I just purchased a tail light on ebay but the part number is different from the number on my original light. - will there be an issue using this tail light?
The part number from my light is 991.631.146.12 and the one I bought online is 991.631.145.13
3.) should I install the new light or bring it to a specialist - I know this is subjective but what would you do?

I have heard of this with the front lights (think standing on the bakes and the headlights pop out) but never with the back lights.

I went in for an annual service and came back with a cracked tail lamp. Dealer replaced "under warranty" as they stated but somehow I think they damaged it in service.
This had to have been caused by a tech damaging the brackets somehow. Have you had a service done that warranted removing it?

Looks like you're also missing the two black covers that go just above the lights to cover the bolts. Has someone done some work on your rear bumper?
EDIT: Looks like your "Carrera 4S" lettering is way off center - so I'm assuming someone did something with your bumper. Taking off the bumper means taking out the lights, so I'm guessing someone broke a lot of things putting those lights back in. The black covers I mentioned above are very fragile and the tabs are easily broken on those.

If you can operate a screwdriver then you can R&R a 991 tail lamp.
Also, your left tail pipes need adjustment. Sitting an inch too far inboard. Who the hell's been working on your car?

Thanks for the replies guys!
I took my car to an independent for the last oil change - They most likely broke the tab.
Can anyone comment on the different part numbers of the lights?

I had some BMC filters installed at MW awhile back so that could have been the culprit.
More recently, I have been going to Fischer in Barrignton for most of my service. I am very confident in his abilities and really cannot see them breaking the tab and not telling me.

Yes, Rick's team at Fischer does very good work.
This is when you buy the clear tail lights, and when the wife asks 'why', you say, "becuase the clears stay in better for high speed runs!"
