Who opted out of PPF and what does the front look like?
Hey all. I am leasing but still like to keep my car nice. Yesterday someone dropped a load of rocks in front of the loaner and causes 2k in damages. Was gonna pass on the PPF for the 911 I pick up next week but now I'm reconsidering. Curious to see on such a low car how the fronts holding up on people who passed on the PPF. I have had it on all my previous cars and I definitely think it helps but a rock always finds its way through the film eventually anyway. Pics would be much appreciated!

Its not so much the big random chip damage you can see, but smaller damage you can feel, it will be everywhere. The ones that had film feel squeaky smooth when its removed and the ones without it feel sandblasted with literally thousands of tiny hits that have cratered up the surface of the clear coat.

I've put on 9000 miles of mostly highway miles through many bug infested regions in the last 6 months. I have ppf. I can tell by the mess they make that most rock damage will occur on the front bumper cover. If you cover the bumper, you'll miss 80% of the damage.
You have to decide if you can live with that or do the whole front.

I had PPF on my 997 turbo, and I do not have it on my 991 turbo s. I don't miss it. As mentioned above, the PPF doesn't prevent all damage, although it reduces it. My issue with PPF is that it starts to look bad after a few years. I know that you can replace it, but it's not worth the hassle to me.

In the days before ppf people would paint the hood, and bumper and be done with it. Now,we spend same or more on ppf....

If you are a car person (meaning you're at least a little OCD about your car), get the front bumper, fenders and hood done. Otherwise you will go crazy trying to keep the car looking good. I am not a fan of wrapping the whole car. Just the front and the flares behind the rear wheels. Coating on everything. Simple to clean and maintain.

I installed full front end PPF day one on my 2014 and four years, 20k miles and many, many track days later, it's time for new PPF. It has absorbed literally hundreds of hits that would have been chips and scratches. I'd rather change the film than risk a paint job that is not OEM and may not match, etc. Plus, I can recover a lot, if not all, of the cost upon resale when my car looks much newer than a lot of the competition.

My last 2 cars had ppf but I chose not to do it on my recently purchased 991 TTS that I bought cpo with 19k miles on it. For the minimal amount of chips the car has after 20k miles now, I will probably never do film again unless I plan to track it. Maybe front and hips only but no way will I ever spend the $4k+ again. After a paint correction and ceramic coat, my car looks almost new again. Re resale, you will recover zero if trading in your car. My last few trade ins, the dealer never even looked at my car.
Also consider that there is no need to do it right away. Drive it for a while and see how the paint holds up and then reassess. Touch up what you can and then put on the film if it gives you piece of mind.

Put 10k on my Cayman S, black car, with no PPF. Didn't have a single rock chip or any roughness whatsoever. Have about 8k on my Carrera S with no PPF. Have one tiny chip on the bumper and one tiny chip on the hood. No other roughness whatsoever on it either. If I get a GT3 allocation, I will not PPF that car either.

I did not have PPF on my Boxster (midnight blue metallic). At first I touched up the occasional visible chip and was happy. Eventally (3 or 4 years in) the bumper and leading 1/3 of the hood started to look just a bit drab. A couple of years later, it started to look shabby--and any kind of touch up was futile. Meanwhile, the paint on the rest of the car looked great.
I had PPF installed on my 991 on day zero. Too early to tell, but I feel better about driving it.
