Whatever you do, do not get a 997 Turbo as your first Porsche.

^^ LOL, I certainly didn't get one as my First porsche, but I was happily able to go back to a Carrera when I got the Turbos out of my system. (I assume your point was, once you've tasted of that forbidden fruit you can never go back to 3XX lbs-ft of torque.)

I don't think I could ever go back to a normally aspirated car, especially living in the mountains. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to own a normally aspirated GT3, but I'm not really a track guy. For me, the 996 C4S was a great first Porsche. I think a normally aspirated 997.2 or 991.1 would be great also.

The point was the 997 TT/S is such a poor example of Porsche FI engines that if one owned such a machine as their first Porsche, they might think all Porsches were of that nature.
It's like if your first exposure to fermented grape juice was Port, you might think that all wine tasted like that.

I am a degenerate Land Rover guy (Google my username) along with everything else British (lotus, jags) and my intro to Porsche was long hoods. If it is not leaking it is out of oil. If I were not a mere mortal I would have a GT2RS. A 997 turbo is close enough and make it a cab because they are cheaper and it is the only way I see the sun.

Super easy in my opinion. 991.1S or a 997 gts with an extra 20k in your pocket. I have the .1S and love it but would have been happy w GTS as well, especially for first p-car. Makes you appreciate the 997 and gives you a great baseline for all future cars to come!

Race Car
I went through a similar drill three years ago. I started looking at 997 Turbo's (probably 07 or 08's) but I was hesitant to spend so much money on a used car that old. So then I started looking at new 991S's for a lot more money. Then I found a two year old 991S, original MSRP $122k, for about $40k less than MSRP with only 7,200 miles on it and two years left on the factory warranty.
Two years later (last year) I started looking at slightly used 991 Turbo S's but the prices hadn't come down yet to where I wanted to spend (I was probably at least a year or two from where they would have been in the range I was considering). I was also looking for a color that was VERY hard to find.
By accident I came across a 2013 991S with Powerkit/SPASM/PDCC/PCBB/PDK and more with an original MSRP of $172k, only 13k miles on it and 3 years left on the CPO warranty, for close to half of what it was new.
Would I have been happy with a 997 turbo? I'm sure of it. But I fell in love hard with the beautiful shape of the 991, enjoy the updated interior and telematics, and still had a pretty nearly-new car (with low miles and great condition) under warranty.
I plan on keeping this one for quite a while. It's an amazing car.

I am still curious about the base 991.2. Nick Murray states that the best 911 is the base C2 in his opinion. Which options are a must if I do go with a stripper? Thanks again! Love these comments! Very helpful and a fun read!

Make a list of what you personally value in a sports car - then go and drive the cars on your list. You will find the answer is fairly straight forward. I noticed the Cayman wasn't on your list - have a look at a 981S/GTS.
