Default new turbo/turbo s shortage?

Is there a general shortage of new turbo and turbo s 991 models at dealerships? Florida seems to have very few.

Not sure about "tons everywhere".

It took my dealer a few weeks until a 991.2 TTS allocation could be found and confirmed for my build.

It has been confirmed for mid Feb with an April delivery date..

Now I see why some guys have opted to order wait. When you want to actually go and buy one there are some (not too many) but options and dealers vary. It can become a compromise.

Mind you this was earlier this year, and in Canada where our allocations are lower. I first went in my local dealer in late March, it took until late July for them to get a TTS Cab allocation, I then got the car just a few days back. Good luck on your hunt!

They've reduced the number of allocations somewhat so there are fewer cars available now than in past years. Some regions are not discounting or are hardly discounting - a bit tighter this time around. You may also have to wait a bit longer for a custom build slot and look farther if you are targeting a specific discount level as a result. A 991.1 might be a bargain.

As a driver rather than a collector, I'd like to see Porsche better balance supply and demand across the board, GT cars included. Stable depreciation and cars available at MSRP for all. VW may steer in that direction simply to maximize profit.

Found this to be true as well. Went in a month ago to put in a build order and was told the earliest allocation was for March and there was only one! When did build allocations become dear for turbo S cars? If they are trying to turn the turbo market into the same mess the RS market is, I'll be shopping other brands.

Is this just for special order sales?

My build was done just using the standard options provided on the configurator. I think Porsche limits the number of TT and TTS models. Not really sure why, maybe to justify the 'exclusive' nature and higher price.

Added reference info ↓↓↓↓↓:

Excellence Magazine June 2016 pp 55....."Top Gun Turbo" ('17 991.2 first drive/test)

"Most people would assume that the Turbo makes up a very small percentage
of 991 sales. In reality however, it has accounted for an astonishing 25% of sales over
the last two years, underlining the draw of the non-GT flagship model...."

I always find that number surprising. So I got curious and ran some very sloppy numbers to get a feel for relative production.

Since we get about 10k cars per year in North America and 997 production ended in 2012 (so say half 997 half 991 to keep it simple), that's around 45k 991s between 2012-16.

Using 25% of 45k 911s we have about 11k TT/S.

Worldwide production estimates are around 3100 991 GT3s and maybe 4500 991 GT3RS, so about 3k GT3/RS went to us in North America.

TT and GT cars were primarily produced from 2014 on.

That means 991 production for NA looks something like:
12 - 5k 991 Carrera
13 - 10k Carrera
14 - 4k TT/S, 1k GT3/RS, 5k Carrera
15 - 3k TT/S, 1k GT3/RS, 6k Carrera
16 - 4k TT/S, 1k GT3/RS, 5k Carrera

Default 991.2 shortage

compared to 991.1 the allocations of .2's available to south Florida dealers are less than expected. Both 911 Turbo models now have a long waiting list of buyers happy to pay msrp at this point. As it is now the pre-owned .1's are a bargain. For those who must have a .2 and believe they can't pull the trigger on a .2 purchase unless they are given a discount... well, the wait may also be long.

Not doubting your math, but those numbers of the TT/TTS models versus the regular Carrera models just don't seem right.

Yeah I had that same thought too. I've heard 25% of total are TT/TTS thrown around a lot but haven't found any data. So I threw all of the normal assumptions into a data set to see what fell out. If it's not believable, perhaps the data we have floating around here is either suspect or is being misinterpreted.

Now if the 25% TT/S figure refers only to the time the TT/S has been in production and it was a snapshot taken say a year or maybe two after the TT/TTS launch the figure would be a fair bit lower and less of a surprise to me.

But I hear it a lot, so I assume something with the number 25% in it is probably right!

I had this same issue last July. Braman, Champion and the new Penske dealership in West Broward were out of allocations completely. The Collection in South Miami is a flagship dealer and thus gets more allocations of the TT and TTS cars then the others. I've bought a couple TTs's from them and they're customer service has been lacking in my experience but they had the allocations which was most important. Paid almost MSRP, deposit in July, build in Oct, Took delivery mid November.
