Default Tire installation: dealer vs non dealer

I just purchased my turbo and I am looking to put some winter tires on it. Dealer quoted me about 250$ more for the tires than tirerack did so I am going with tirerack. The dealer is also trying to charge me 525$ for installation. I have 5 lug wheels. Do these cars require any special treatment when it comes to tire installation? I use to go to an indy shop in my old carrera s.

For 5-lug, there is no reason to pay dealer pricing. If you had carbon ceramics, the indy shop needs to be aware of how fragile the rotor is, but it's pretty straight forward otherwise. If you had center lock wheels with PCCB, it might be worth the extra piece of mind, but you are fine with the shop that worked on the C2S.

Dealers usually honor Tire Rack pricing, which is where they get the tires. The mounting quote is far too high. Suggest trying another dealer. Be certain to tell whoever mounts your new tires not to scratch the barrels when they remove the balancing weights. Another obvious thing is to ask them what they torque the lugs to. If they seem vague on their answer just tell them what the manual specifies. Finally, the PCM settings for tires have to be checked/adjusted. Even if you had CL's, the quote for installation was too high. None of this is rocket science and if you do not have confidence in the tech, go elsewhere.

Check out their tire changing equipment and find a place that uses a high end Corghi machine. If used properly, it won't leave marks on your wheels like other lesser machines may.

Try and find a Hunter "Road Force touch" in your area. Luckily, there is a race shop in our little coastal town that does all four for $ 200 start to finish. T

Those machines are $17,000 according to the guy who owns the service station where I wash my car and fill it up. He just bought one so he could deal with low profile tires. Wherever you get a low profile tire you are going to pay extra to get it on and off the rim otherwise you are going to risk nicks on your wheels. I got the tire rack price on the rears from the guys that work on my car, $398 per tire and the install and balance for both was $138. I don't usually take it to the dealer except for issues that are related to warranty. Recently the dealer replaced one of my rears under the tire warranty and they listed the tire and installation for $520 but it was covered by the insurance. I think that $250 for the installation of 4 tires is probably about right. It's also what we paid at NTB for four PZeros on the CTTS back in July.
