Clear film on Headlights
#31
Considering this thread was created over 2 years now, I'm curious if anyone has in fact had any issues with their head lights after installing PPF (paint protection film) over them.
Some say it could possibly cause the lens to delaminate or something if / when you were to remove the film for any reason at all...
My car is getting PPF installed tomorrow and while I usually do have the headlights protected, Im still on the fence on giving the green light to go ahead and do them.
TIA

I elected to cover my headlights when my whole car got Xpel'ed. However, I asked my installer to treat the lens with C-Quartz first prior to covering them with film. Hopefully that will help mitigate any issues but only time will tell.

Not sure if the 2011s have the same laminate on the headlights but I just had the old film on mine removed and new film added with no issues. I mentioned my concern about removing the old film to the installer and he said not to worry as long as it is carefully removed.

Talked to installers doing a whole car xpel on new McLarens at the dealership yesterday. They said they do not recommend nor install any clear film on 991 headlights.

My TTS had the film on the lights when I got it and we decided not to redo them when I redid the paint panels with xpel for this reason. However, when it is time to replace and delamination happens, we will just sand an polish the headlights and recover with expel which is a UP protection in itself.

I just bit the bullet and asked my installer to put film on the headlights. I figure the lights can be resurfaced if they delaminate, and then have film reapplied. Having seen the headlights on other cars looking quite beat up, I thought would be worth the risk.

Don’t mean to bump an old thread, but would the darkened headlights with PDLS+ be any different than other 991 headlight covers? Also interested to determine what to do.

PPF on Headlights
PPF potential of removing layer on headlights (which will not happen if removed correctly with steam) is the lessor of two evils which is getting your headlight sandblasted without the film.

I purchased my GT4 last year, and the original owner had PPF on the lights when new, so it’s about 3 years old now. Since purchase I’ve tracked about 30 days, and the lights look brand new.
In fact, one of the guys I track with was remarking about how his lights looked sand blasted and mine were perfect. That’s when I realized they were PPF’d.
If you are tracking I would definitely PPF due to the amount of stuff getting kicked up from cars in front of you. If regular use, then it’s your call.

Same dilemma here. Just had my hood redone in ppf. The headlights are covered and have several tears and chips in them that stand out. I had planned to have my installer return to remove the old film and put new suntek film on but now I’m concerned. It’s 2015 TTS .
