Tire and Rim Insurance
Picking up my car this week and dealer is recommending Tire and Rim Insurance for about $2,000. Any recommendations and is $2,000 a good price?

You can buy this from another dealer such as Toyota, Honda or Chevrolet. Find out what company your dealer uses and go online and find dealers in your area that sell it also. You will save lots of money doing it this way. It will be the same coverage for much less money. Then when you need to use it, take it to your dealer and they can enter it into your service for future reference.
I know someone who did this and they paid $550 and saved $1600 off the quoted price.
Just an option to consider.

I used to buy this and it rarely seemed to pay off. So I stopped. Now on my wife's Cayenne - 2,900 on odometer - we have had to replace five tires and two wheels. Of those I think probably 2 tires would have been covered. But how is that for luck..... $2,000 seems high though.

I was quoted $1500 from the dealership. I asked who the coverage was through and said no thanks. I ended up getting the coverage through a patient's honda dealership over the phone for $650. Same coverage through same company. My friend did the same and got his for $950 without knowing anyone at a toyota dealership.

Yeah, that is too high. I paid $1100 for three years on my BMW and I have already had three tires replaced on the M5, all rears. I paid $1595 for a 5 year policy on my TTS, with the savings I was getting on my deal I was perfectly OK with this, it was the only additional thing I bought at the closing.

I bought it as well, 1500, more for my piece of mind than anything. I bent 2 rims on a Jag XKR and know how valuable it is to have. I am hoping because I spent the money on it, I will never need to use it.

Good lord -- why is all this insurance needed? I've never had a flat (but, I don't drive much). But why are people ruining their wheels? What is happening out there that is wrecking a wheel such that it has to be replaced? I wasn't planning on getting this insurance -- but are TTS wheels/tires not reliable or what?
What is the replacement cost for a new wheel?

I never had an issue on my P car rims, but the DFW metroplex is well known for potholes and other road surface issues. Even the most careful driver can hit a pothole.

@NYCone - I think he said LDS tier 1 insurance. There were multiple tiers. I haven't picked the car up and with the holiday weekend haven't had the chance to go over there and pay for it.
@Fred Flintstone - I live in New Orleans. Got potholes? Damage to my first 911 in 2005 consisted of 1 bent wheel (insurance and that one wheel was a wash) and 6 tires, mostly rears. The tires were all sidewall nails during construction post hurricane Katrina.
