Bored on a Saturday, ceating a new discussion; K40
Bored, sitting in the Great Plains Region and waiting for spring.
Thought I'd start a new thread discussion for kicks.
I have had K40 radar/jammers in all of my new Porsches (2 Cayman-S's, Boxter S, Cayenne S, 991C-S cab, 997 Turbo, and 991 Turbo S).
Love the system, but I know there are alternatives. Also, know that some states (i.e. MN) have passed legislation prohibiting the "jamming" aspect....but K40 has tried to engineer around it by making the "jamming" aspect less detectible.
What are you all doing in regardings to radar/jamming?

Forget radar. You should get a laser interceptor laser jammer. Works unbelievably. For radar I use a V1. I believe the Bell stir is the top built in detector.

I did a lot of research on laser jammers prior to installing an Escort 9500ci in my Ferrari 458 and 997 Turbo S. From the literature and testing reviews, as well as personal accounts, systems like Laser Interceptor, Escort 9500Ci stood out as good products. At the very opposite end of the continuum was a resounding concensus of opinion that K40 systems claiming laser jamming or shifting capabilities were virtually useless and ineffective. In fact, I thought no one bought K40 any more. As a result, I always felt sorry for folks who have K40, feeling they somehow got sucked in, deceived. I do not mean to insult in any way but ask: do you have any reliable evidence that K40 is worthwhile.

Even tho the weather is awsome in Atlanta, I will share an exciting story. I went to a fundraiser for Cistic Fibrosis last night. My friend Jon's sons have been inflicted with the decease and Jon (a gt3 hot shoe) and his wife Pam with the help of tons of people put on Shamrockin for a Cause. There were a few thousand people at the event last night and without a doubt raised some serious funds.http://shamrockinforacre.com/. I am just off back surgery so my time partying is limited, but Jon told me there was a membership at AMP, Atlanta Motorsports Park. Id been with Jon before and aways wanted to join but really was questioning the cost versus how much I'd use it. Well, the live auction started and I jumped on it. I wasn't going to lose it, especially with the proceeds going to such a great cause. My heart goes out to the Baker Family. Please donate if you can because money and research are keeping those inflicted alive. Im not trying to solicit but Jon is a DI Porsche instructor and just wanted to see if the Porsche family would help. I will take anyone to the course for a day of driving for a donation of 500.00 . God bless. Here is a link to the AMP:

fun and great way to blow off some steam. I was able to hit 109 on the strait where as Jon in his 997 GT3 was able to hit 119.

Very timely thread...I'm definitely interested in countermeasures for laser...WSP love their LIDAR toys. As a result I've been doing some reading around and I found this write up on the K40 G5 that suggests not only that it's good but is in fact the best around right now.
I've had a V1 in my former DD (M5) for years and I don't think I could live without the directional arrow display for radar anymore but without the LIDAR countermeasures I-5 is a potentially more expensive place to lose track of how fast you are going. Reading around V1 and related kit I found the Radar Mirror site...anyone have experience with this setup?? Looks like a pretty slick way to get the display integrated in a nice stealthy way.
I also read in a couple of other forum places that installers may be wary of working on 991's at least as far as rear laser transceivers are concerned. Anyone run into that issue or I guess more interesting: anyone actually had rear facing laser transmitters fitted yet??

In case this helps anyone else...
After some further research, I decided to go with the Escort 9500ci with the newly launched Laser Shifter Pro (in place of the now discontinued ZR4 system).
So far as I can tell, the Laser Shifter Pro equipment is designed and built by Laser Interceptor and licensed to Escort. Thus you get more or less the same capability with the Escort system now as you do with the LI system, except that it's integrated nicely with the radar detection capabilities of the 9500ci.
I also opted for the display to be mounted in the rear view mirror in the cabin. I'm fairly sure this part came from Radar Mirror -- in my case the display element shows up in the lower right of the mirror surface though (some of the illustrations on the site linked show it left side).
I had the work done at Benchmark Motoring up in Bellevue. I had a couple of different references (from this board among them) to suggest they do good work. Do they ever! I'm very pleased with the install. Mind you, their work does not come cheap but if you want an install that looks like it might have come from the factory, this is the place. Justin Kairis looked after me very well from start to finish. He was in touch over a weekend to prepare the work and when it came time to do the job he just decided to put a RED mirror display in for me instead of the default BLUE...I didn't even know there was that option...very good call it turns out since I have the glass sunroof and with the extra light that brings into the cabin the RED works much better for contrast purposes.
As you can see from the pictures, the install is very tidy.
For the rear plate they custom fabricate a new plate holder that holds the license plate and the rear shifter elements. Note also the cut-out they make in the frame to dovetail around the back up camera. [forgive me the weird look to the picture -- I messed with the coloration to help show the shape of the upper area of the custom frame better...it does look nicer in person I promise!]
In the interior, the control head for the 9500ci is mounted in the ashtray (I selected the smoking package although I'm no smoker precisely to ensure power into this cubby for just this kind of install). The mounting plate is again a custom piece, laser etched with the Porsche logo. The stubby button at the bottom there is something they added too -- it's the manual power on/off override switch although the unit is wired to the ignition as your default.
There are plenty of other places to see how shifter heads are mounted to the front of the car so I'll spare you more repeat pics here. I will add that Benchmark drills no new holes for these installs -- they fabricate brackets for everything so that the entire kit attaches only to existing chassis bolts in the various places required.
If you aren't located conveniently for visiting Benchmark Motoring yourself, Justin did tell me that they are now making and supplying the mounting parts like the ones on my car to other custom install shops in various parts of the country -- if you are interested, I suppose you might be able to have your local installer give Justin a call if they aren't already in touch and could use something like these parts.
Had the system in for a couple of weeks and I've already had a couple of chances to practice the double-tap on the MUTE button to flip the laser heads from shift to receive (after judicious use of the brakes, naturally ). So far so good!

Looking at your install pics - do the rear diffusers block the plate lights? Did your installer drop them through the plastic or are they just very shallow? Thanks.

Good question! The rear diffusers don't seem to block the plate lights overly -- put it this way: I hadn't really thought about that until you asked so I went and had a look...seems serviceable to me although I'm sure in literal point of fact there is some loss of illumination on the plate.

Very nice setup of the 9500ci. I've inquired of Benchmark Motoring if they can recommend an installer anywhere near Boston. In the meantime, I have Escort Live on my iPhone and while nowhere near as good as the 9500ci shifter, it has been reliable on well traveled roads.
