Question eng cover opened by itself

I was washing my windows using Windex. When I got to the RH rear window, just as I touched the glass with the paper towel the engine cover popped open as if someone had activated the switch. This has never happened before and I've never found the cover released when going out to the car. Can anyone explain to me what is going on?

Wow, that’s a new one. I’ve had issues with the bonnet lid opening when washing the car with the key in my pocket, but I’ve never seen the engine cover open.

Did you have the key FOB in your pocket and pressed up against the car? Since you were in close proximity to the car, that'd what most likely happened. Otherwise that's a new one. 🤷‍♂️

Has the engine oil filter been replaced recently? Or, any "service" in the rear recently?

  • Sensor/Touch (Optional): Some models with "Entry & Drive" allow a sensor swipe near the rear tail light/spoiler to pop the latch.

I was on the side of the car, directly in line with the rear, side window. My key was in my pocket, but I only touched the car with the paper towel to wash that window. No service was recently done. The last time the engine cover was opened was 1600 miles ago. The car had been parked in my garage for approx. 30-36 hours. I agree this is a strange one. I'll continue to watch it and follow up if I discover anything.
