Default Tips on removing cats

Hi all, about to change my exhaust. Anyone have tips on removing to top nuts on the cats? Does everyone replace the gaskets from cats to turbos?

Thanks
Bud

Definitely replace the gaskets. Too much trouble to go back if a small rip causes a leak.

I think I just used a swivel socket. Couldn’t have been too bad as I just had rotator cuff surgery before I installed the Kline.

If you have a dremel use a carbon tip grinder to remove some of the material under the nuts...enough to get a thin wall socket or open end wrench on them. Only need to grind a little to get them off

12mm wrenches

I can't be serious???..Im assuming he has tried wrenches and the problem is there is not enough room for them to fit between the nut and housing. I had the same problem with aftermarket sport cats. It happens. Its something I had to do.

I briefly went under and took a look, I can tell those nuts on top are going to be hard to get at.

I have done this nine or 10 times on my 991 turbo I never use the Dremel or a sawzall or whatever
you can do this simply with the right tools no cutting required
And yes I’m very very serious LOL

I second that..

I have installed several 991 TT exhausts and never had to cut/hack anything away..

The last 991 TT exhaust that I installed (tubi w/cats) I did on a lift while wearing a Button down with a half zip sweater and did not even remove the bumper..

Really straightforward install with the correct tools

What correct tools do you recommend? Anything out of the ordinary?

Thanks

Worked for me! I used every type of wrench and/socket out there including crow foot open end wrenches. The design of the cats I had simply did not allow anything to fit around the nut in order to loosen it, and with the heat the cats produce it was tight. The copper/brass material on the nuts is soft as it is. Didn't do any hacking or cutting although I thought about using a nut slitter I just removed enough material on the housing under the nut enough to fit a thin wall socket on. Good luck Op...hope yours is as easy as finding the right tool...mine wasn't.

Nothing too out of the ordinary.

Just a combination of extensions, swivel-joints, and deep/short sockets, gear wrenches.

Yep, not every installation or removal is the same. PM me if you need more specific info. When you’ve done this for 30 years you figure out the tricks of the trade
