About to purchase Turbo S.. need some advice

I usually buy my Porsches new but thought that it might be a better decision to get preowned in this particular case as I don't plan on holding the car for more than a couple of years and rather not take the massive depreciation hit.

Here's the scenario:

2015 turbo s with approx 10k miles or 2017 turbo s with 5k.
Both cars are almost equitable in build, the 2015 has a few more bells.
Both would be CPO.

Is the newer body style, 20 more hp, electronics, etc worth an extra $35k??

Looking for some good advice here before I pull the trigger.

If you are concerned about depreciation then 2015 is way to go, plus if you want to add 80hp it will cost you a lot less than 35k🙂

however, i do think the.2 looks better bu not by much

CPO will cover you until 2021 or 2023, so your 2 years of planned ownership are covered.

2017 will depreciate more than 2015.

The new car is not 20hp stronger, more like 35hp stronger.

what’s the intended use? If yoy need the latest smartphone go with 2017, if you enjoy the car computer screens more than the driving experience, actually don’t get the 2017 get a Tesla.

I like the look of the 991.1 more, cleaner lines, I don’t like the 3D taillights (but my latest 991 has them).

In 2 years the 992 Turbo should be out, lots of 991.2 would hit the used market by then so more depreciation.

I abandoned the idea to upgrade to the 991.2 that I had last year, went shopping other brands (Lambo, Ferrari, McLaren), but horror histories and quality issues and I’m very fine with my 991 TTS.

Short answer: if you don’t care about $35k, buy the 2017, if you do, buy the 2015 and pick-up a Camaro SS 1LE or Civic Type R to trash on track days, rallies, car shows, etc.

I've owned both a '15 turbo s and now have a '19 turbo s. The .2, in my opinion, feels quicker, transmission feels sharper and the handling is better. I had the Champion Motorsports stage 2+ package on my '15 and I swear my stock '19 turbo is quicker. The .2 turbo pulls a lot harder to redline, where I think the .1 ran out of breath at higher rpm's. That being said, the '15 turbo s is a fantastic car and it will not disappoint and is certainly the bargain of the two. If you plan on trading up for the 992 turbo in 1-2 years, buy the '15 turbo s, but if you planning on owning the car for 3+ years, I'd buy the .2 turbo s. Good luck with the decision and I think the turbo s and the GT3's are the best sports cars available for sale.

haha.. I'll keep the camaro SS in mind.. even an older z06 ;)

That's a good perspective on the 991.2, makes total sense.

I was thinking that the downside is much more limited in the 991 and the cost to surpass the .2 in power would be negligible if I wanted to modify or just upgrade the CPU.

Its not worth $35K IMO. Especially if you only plan to keep for 2 years. Get a Cobb AP and you can exceed the 20HP and then some. Only thing that I miss is Apple Car Play. Newer car is better looking and there are some upgrades. I did the .1 and spent on tune and exhaust and am very happy. Another perspective is that they are so fast stock, you may be happy with nothing done.

Keep in mind on the .2 you have to send in the ECU to tune it. The .1 is plug and play. Also i am guessing the differential is more than 35k for similar spec. The ONLY thing I miss on my .1 are the steering wheel controls and heated wheel. Everything else is fantastic. I am sure if I went from my .1 with springs, exhaust and tune to a stock .2 I would be a bit dissapointed. Especially in the sound and stance department.

What’s the source of this claim?

After seeing some of the limitations with the 991.1 turbo S I'd probably pony up and get the 991.2 turbo S instead. Better interior, tuning gains, stronger engine (TBD?).

Papa Fittig 02-09-2019 07:32 PM

If you thinking depreciation, it is an easy decision. 2 years more into depreciation curve for '15 makes it a clear winner with this regard.
Also upcoming 992 Turbos will for sure send 991.2 down even more.

So the decision really boils down to whether or not you want 991.2 more to a point you are ready to pay the for the difference in the price and future depreciation.

When I did my choice buying a used CPOd TTS replacing my 991 GTS, I ended up buying 991.1 TTS over 991.2 TTS and no regrets.

.
pleaas explain the tuning gain and stronger engine comments. I’m pretty sure it’s the same engine. I think the tune and turbos might be tweaked but otherwise the same.

For me I would go with the older car for the baked in depreciation.

I really am more about the power and taking it out for drives on nice weather mostly.. it might be a longer hold but I honestly doubt it.

Sounds like the .1 is the way to go

Didn't know that the ECU tune is easier on a .1 - besides the minor facelift, sounds like the .1 with a tune would be a great fun toy!

So now.. how does a tune play in to the CPO warranty?

That's what I would do...then the tune is an option if the power is not enough for you and you still come out much cheaper with less depreciation.

Randyc151 02-10-2019 02:09 PM

I've had both, and the .2 is to me a much stronger car. It also handles better, by the seat of my pants, and rides better. I traded my 14 for my 17 for these reasons, with no regrets. And as far as the specs, it's supposed to be 20hp more, but I agree that it's easily more like 35hp, judging by my track differences in lap times - top speed on the back straight at VIR in the .1 was 163mph, in the .2 it was 170mph right out of the box. All that said, both cars are great, but I took more than a $35k hit to upgrade. The 991.2 is also holding up on value much, much better than the .1.

As to tuning, it really depends on the relationship with your dealer. My local dealer told me they would not cover any engine/trans warranty if I added a tune to either car, so tuning with a CPO may not be possible anyway.
