Default 100 octane gas...?

i filled my 991 turbo with 100 octane at lime rock ( only did it because my session started and someone was using the 93 pump)

observations, car ran much smoother. Both on idle and on track. Maybe was all in my head but did seem like. small smoothness difference.

Anyone else have any experience here? I don’t think it’s worth 10.50/gallon FWIW.

While all todays cars have knock sensors, some of today's cars can advance the timing when they sense no knocks and better fuel (higher octane) , so yes your car was probably loving the 100 octane. I have 100 octane on tap at a gas station a mile from my home, so I have a 100 octane setting in my Z06, hellcat and now my Porsche, did I say PORSCHE, I mean I will have it soon because it's not out yet.

I ran 100 oct a few years on my 14 Turbo S and ran my best time ever @ 10.36 quarter mile on Stage 2 Cobb.

IMO, The stock tune probably will not eliminate all knocking. And under normal 'track' conditions I'd expect one or two knocks during load on-set (i.e. mashing the pedal coming out of a corner.) And of course, on-track heat soak will lower the knock limit. When knocking occurs, the DME ECU will pull back timing on the affected cylinder for a few revs then ramp it back up to normal. AFAIK, the stock tune will not advance timing until knocking occurs. Thus it doesn't adapt to higher octane all on its own. There are timing limits (a timing 'map' with minimum dimensions of load vs. rpm) that the DME pulls back from. With the Turbo motors, the Porsche DME may also limit boost under high-heat conditions to retain control of the knock limit, but that's more-or-less speculation on my part. (But, we do know that the Z06 will limit boost when heat soaked...)

With 100 octane gas you're pushing the knock threshold out so there's maybe no knocking at all even under track conditions and you thus get the benefit of 'all' of the stock tune with no timing pull-back due to knocking.

Also, 99% of knock is silent. By the time you hear knocking you've had 100s of knock events.

Just don't leave any of the 100 octane gas in the tank for more than a couple of weeks. In my experience it breaks down a lot-more quickly than top-tier pump gas and can cause running issues when its old.
