I am a die-hard Porsche fan, but wow, hard to argue with the numbers.

Three words: Leaf spring suspension.
I hope they learn from the Z06 heat soak debacle.
It's sure to be a beast. Question is if it will have more real-world endurance than a single Nordschleife lap.
Interested in how this develops, but not for me. C7 is too 'shouty.'

I'm not a hater: We have a yellow z06 in the garage. Fun car. Better fun/dollar ratio than Porsche.

Not really blown away....I'm like worf and think it's trying too hard to be that "look at me" machine,...and that wing ( I know it's optional ) is ricey over the top...ya the power is getting up there but so is the flab...this all from the owner of this garage queen...

It's still "JUST" a Corvette.

Not a hater either but Corvette's just don't excite me, no matter how much HP.

Would still rather have a 991 Turbo S

Default ZR1 thoughts from a C7-Z06 owner

I'm a huge Corvette fan, I currently own both a C7 Z06 that saw lots of track time and a C5 Z06 racecar that competes in SCCA. I saw the ZR1 announcement as inevitable after the success they have had with the 1LE models of the Camaro and the great press coverage of the Viper ACR. Chevy wants to be associated with track supremacy, and "for the price" you cant buy a faster track weapon. There is no question that Chevy can make a fast track car that happens to be legal for the street, the question is: "can you live with that track car on the road?". After 3 years of owning a Z06/Z07, I bought myself a 2015 Turbo S because the Z06 was just painful on the road. I never really understood why the P-Cars cost so much money compared to the Corvettes until I spent some real time in a 991 Turbo... now I get it.. its almost as fast on track and its 100x better on the street (the 911).

As for the ZR-1, I am willing to bet it will dethrone the Viper ACR but it will do it at the cost of comfort and usability. If your hunting for track time, it will probably be your most cost effective weapon but I wouldn't want to drive it every day.

Been there too, sold my ZR1 this summer. Good platform with lots of potential but not built for track durability. The new C8 potential mid engine will be the interesting one IMO. For any interested:

My random thoughts:

I love Corvettes. My first awesome car was a C5 coupe.

This latest ZR1 was widely speculated about as soon as the C7 was introduced. I think Chevy wouldn't have made one, except for all of the heat issues that the Z06 suffered from. The two additional intakes in the front fascia will probably solve this. Though I don't care much for their look; they're a bit awkward and non-integrated, almost as if...Chevy had to engineer it at the eleventh hour.

The power - 750 HP - is mind-numbing, but if it's not useable it's pointless - the Z06 had problems putting all of its 650 HP down to the ground. Chevy says they've made significant adjustments to the suspension, so we'll see.

The wing is quite "ricey," but then again, so is the wing on the GT3/GT3 RS. If you're going to drive this car as intended on the track, you couldn't care less about the look of the wing.

As a road car, it's probably not going to be very good. Much like the Camaro ZL1 1LE, which performs like a beast for the money, but I never want to ride in one ever again, because the suspension is stiffer than a British upper lip.

I think it's quite lame that it uses the 8-speed auto from the rest of the Corvette family. Chevy should have taken this opportunity to bring out a true dual-clutch tranny.

For me, if I were to get a car in this price range and class, it would have to be more versatile than just a track toy, so I'd want a Turbo S. Still, have to give credit to Chevy for the sheer amazing ridiculousness of it all.

this step too much of an already pretty good thing imo

c7 z06 can't put all the power down as it is, and the pricing on this one is much worse on the value for performance scale

if they fix the cooling issue then it is a step forward, and get the damn seat bottom down so 6 ft-ers can fit in the car properly with a helmet on... wtf! from detroit?

wait for the mid engined car coming

Heat soak has been resolved in the 2018 MY C7 Z06.

That said, not sure sure anyone really cross-shops a Corvette ZR1 (or any Corvette) with a Porsche Turbo/Turbo S.

I respect the car, especially on track. The Z06, properly driven, is a handful to stay in front of on the track, and I imagine this car will be able to top that on long straights. That said, I would not consider the ZR1 as a car I would rather drive than a 991.2 TTS.

I like the Corvette, and I really do believe it’s a great value considering the performance you get per dollar spent. That being said, I prefer the Porsche.

Interesting and good news. What did GM do? And are there real world confirmations? '18's just hitting the streets now.

Certainly, an informed shopper would not look to a ZR1 to fullfil the same requirements as a TurboS. That said, as you can see from these replies that there are folks that shop for, or have, or have had, or will have both.

I wrote, effectively, 'meh' above. That's not precise. I don't see any C7 as a replacement for one of our Porsches. But, as far as a different purpose is concerned, there might be room for a C7 in the garage at some point.

That's how I feel about my M4 GTS - it's a very fun car, not a direct comparison or replacement for my TTS.

It's not a leaf spring suspension as the term is commonly defined. The Corvette has used for many years, a flat, transverse spring element in a pretty sophisticated rear suspension package. It is a fully independent suspension with the transverse spring also acting as an anti roll bar. It has no resemblance to leaf spring suspensions as used on most 20th century American cars and trucks. Those suspensions were cheap and then you ran out of good things to say.
