Good question and great observation!
I read a forum on this site where multiple members indicated if you fill with the pump up like this, the pump will not click off and it is a smoother fill up.
One member called it "gangsta style", which I found hilarious.
As this is my first 911, I filled up like this every time for the first few tanks thinking this must be true. Shortly thereafter, I decided to fill with the pump in the "normal" position and have not seen a bit of difference. Since then, I no longer fill up Gangsta Style!
Perhaps it was an issue on older models and folks just continue to do this, but I can't understand the reason they do if not.
