991.2 GTS, GT3, GT2, GT3 RS, Mission E - Update

GT3.2RS can keep the same 4.0L but extract more power from it and stay completely safe.
GT3.2 and GT3.2RS sharing the same powerplant but different HP and torque curve is easy and ready.
GT3.2 will be tuned for the manual with faster laptime in PDK-S but the
GT3.2RS will be the laptime and only the laptime, no manual to consider. 25hp difference or even 20 is enough for everybody on this forum to run to the dealer shop and cry for an allocation
Put slightly higher rpm, less weight with exotic materials and you have an unicorn again without reaching the barbecue level of 9000rpm!

IMO :
GT4 RS-not happening at the moment-confirmed by AP(could be BS like time and time again, but I believe him this time) : GT4 RS with 4.0L and more track focused, lighter, more downforce than current GT4=>faster than GT3. No way that is happening!
They don't need 4.0L when the current Carrera S engine in the GT4 is choked. Just let it breathe and you got 430 HP=>cost stays low.
" New GT3 engine " ?! Give me a break! How about improved design so that it doesn't blow up? Sounds better.
Autocar's cleaning lady is weak sauce,at least for this article written while sitting on the toilet seat.

I think it depends how they go about detuning it. What if they drop the redline 1,000 rpm and put a really conservative camshaft. That would be way less fun (the low redline is what necessitates the tall gearing). Or maybe they use the identical engine and use software to keep the throttle from opening all the way like they did on the 981 Boxster/Cayman? Or maybe they use restrictive intake and exhaust that can be replaced in the aftermarket? Will be interesting...

Interesting news for sure. A sanctioned "leak" to get the buzz going. I still doubt the GT4 RS bit but who knows. GT3.2 news seems solid as does that for the GT2. Evolution of the 4.0 makes sense but tweaks, not a new architecture. I don't see where this leaves room for a 991 RS.2 but maybe they jam it into the line up in '18, still seems doubtful...

When the current GT4 was released, there was not a manual gearbox available to use with the current 3.8L "GT" motor, even if detuned. Now, with the .2 6MT GT3, they can offer both manual and PDK if desired, for the GT4RS, with a dry sumped, GT motor, detuned. Plus charge more.
They got us all, hook line and sinker.

Interesting new story in Autocar by Andrew Frankel confirming the 4.0L in the .2 GT3 with a manual option.
Also in the story:

Also in the story:
- GT2 RS by end of 2017 with 650hp.

Thanks for posting. Am a bit confused on the engine based on this quote from the article:
will have a 4.0-litre flat six engine, according to a well-informed source close to the factory. It will not be the same 4.0-litre engine that's found in the current GT3 RS and 911 R, but an evolution capable of producing "at least" the same 500bhp and up from the 475bhp of the last ‘standard’ GT3.
Would want the same basic engine design as what will be racing in the new RSR this year. The GT road cars used to share the same basic engine. I'm confused in what is running in the new GT3R, RSR and the road cars!

Frankel lost a lot of credibility with me when he parroted what Hatz told him about the 991.1 RS engine being "all-new" vs. 991.1 GT3.
Frankel's news writing is fine, but his road testing prose is usually superb.
No it is not odd. GT3Cup and GT3RSR share the same engine with different HP.

The 510 bhp quote for the RSR is (1) a projection (2) based on the assumed size of the sonic restrictor (which will vary from race to race and between IMSA and WEC).

The 3.8 engine in NA guise is not available anymore and the 3.8 in the Turbo is so different that it would be totally unsuitable for use in a NA environment without significant change. So why not drop a detuned 4.0l in.

I wonder whether there is any chance of a manual naturally aspirated convertible (or targa). In the past Porsche was willing to cut off some windshield, put in a GT-ish engine, charge a lot of monies and call it a "Roadster" (instead of "Cabriolet").

I think you're thinking of a Speedster. Could happen (Convertible version of 911R), but only rumors til now...

It would not surprise me if a detuned 4.0l engine in a new GT4 comes to pass because if they want to continue the success of the GT4 line, what else are they going to use?

Also what about the cost to produce? Maybe a detuned 4l for the GT4RS they don't need the unobtanium crank.
