Snapped rear axle

Don't know if this has any bearing on your case but at least two of the 911s had axle issues in this year's Rolex 24. I recall the 73 car as well as one of the RSRs getting axle repairs. Maybe Porsche has made some subtle changes to the axles looking for additional performance, such as weight reduction, that may be causing the axles to fail. Obviously just speculating but not the first case I have heard. Good luck with the Cayman.

This sucks Rich. How do you suppose the gears and diff held up during this "accidental" breakage? I would at least ask for a good photo or two to keep them on the up and up.

I just spoke with my tech. On the cup cars its not an uncommon item to replace. He was curious where had it failed (outer CV end or gearbox/diff end, or shear through the middle etc). He hasn't seen the issue on the 991 GT3 yet but then no one in NZ has done 65 track days on one either!

FWIW,there's a big difference between " snapped ",which would imply a fracture in the metal rod that is part of the axle assembly,as Mark(mqandil) very well suggested...and the axle joint coming apart, which can happen... BIG BIG difference!
Another point : I would imagine that the rear axle on cars with RWS should have a slightly different design than regular cars,to allow the joint the movement inside the cup inward and outward...

Here are some photos of where it snapped. They were torquing the hub with a manual torque wrench when it snapped, per the standard Porsche procedure. The other hub went on fine with the same procedure before they tried this one and had the failure. Some comments seem to be referring to torquing the wheel - this wasn't a wheel install; this was part of attaching a new hub.

WOW! I must say I'm shocked! I can't believe an axle would snap like that! I have never seen anything like this! Could this be a manufacturing defect? Complete garbage!

Never seen one break like that. Definitely looks like it was twisted. While they are in there you might ask them to replace the other.
