GT3 Towing Setup (Lots of Pictures)
Gents,
I wanted to share my tow setup after an awesome trip to Watkins Glen. Thanks to Zone 1 PCA for hosting a great event!
Also, special thanks to Jason Henderson of Henderson Motorsports. He was great to deal with, gave me a strong discount, and was able to locate a trailer, customize it, and have it delivered to me in less than a week. I couldn't imagine a smoother transaction and can't recommend Henderson strongly enough. Give them a shout if you're looking into buying a trailer! http://hendersonmotorsports.com
Towing Setup:
- Macan S (Tow Vehicle)
- Trailex CT-8045
- Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller
- Weigh Safe Trailer Hitch

Where on the car do you anchor the straps? Somewhere on the suspension?

This kit has really nice protective fleece sleeves for the wheels so they don't scratch or scuff.

I get about 420 lbs tongue weight (the scale is a little hard to read precisely). Trailer is 910 lbs, accessories are probably another 80 lbs, GT3 is about 3150-ish. All in all, the tongue weight seems about right. The center of gravity on the 911s seem to be right about at the rear of the front seats, so that is the sweet spot where to leave at the center of the trailer axles.
I'm glad that I had the tongue weight scale, because when I initially eyeballed and parked the GT3, I only had about 150 lbs of tongue weight. When I adjusted and moved the car forward only a couple of inches, it was at a perfect 420 lbs. I wouldn't have verified this easily without the scale!

Aren’t you NOT supposed to not tow with the Macan because of PDK and differential failures?

Plus, there are some pretty steep hills heading up to the Glen, and the PDK definitely didn't bog down or hesitate to climb. I'm not too worried about it at the end of the day. Although it could make the case for getting a Cayenne Hybrid / Raptor stronger .

Eh, the Macan is a 2017, so I still have plenty of warranty. Also, I'm towing below the capacity. ROW has the Macan towing capacity at 5,200 lbs. I'm still under the lowered US towing capacity.

I don't recommend towing with a Raptor unless you do a bunch of suspension mods etc. Suspension is way too soft and with barely any weight off the back it squats like crazy......ask me how I know.

How did the gt3 do on the road, any issues towing it? I ask because I’m going back and forth between open and closed trailer. Would like to do open due to less weight, cheaper and less x-wind effect but also don’t want stuff pounding the car. Thanks

GT3 has a full Xpel wrap, so I was not too concerned about it. Aside from a few bugs (it gets pretty rural in upstate NY), the GT3 was completely fine. Some people elect to get the wind screen option on the Trailex, but it's just a vinyl covering. Not sure I'd go for that option.
