Default Porsche Says No to PPF for Headlights.

Not comfortable with protecting everything from the windshield forward with Xpel Ultimate and leaving the headlights exposed.

I've heard Porsche says the clear-coat over the headlights may be damaged when the film is removed.

Has anyone heard this and know of any safe alternatives?

Thank you.

I've heard that there is a warning to installers to let their customers know there is risk of a UV coating on the headlights peeling off with the removal of PPF. Applies to 2016+ Pcars. Doesn't always happen but can and there no repair can be done to the headlights.

My XPEL certified, and dealer preferred, installer told me the same.

Depends on the installer. A few highly skilled guys have done many here.

I am putting Suntec on my headlights. The adhesive is much less aggressive than Xpel. I am doing the rest of the car in Xpel.

Had my headlights done in Expel but forgot to do the DRLs a couple of years ago. Fast forward to today and the DRL are sandblasted but the headlights are in mint condition with one small stonechip. so my installer just carefully heated the film to remove it without any damage to the light and installed a new layer of expel. Now lights look like the day I picked it up in the showroom but no PPF DRL remain badly pitted.

Would definitely PPF the lights. On the RS have actually done the lights, DRL, indicators and door sills in addition to all the paintwork. NACA ducts, side skirt and intakes also in Expel Stealth. A good installer should know how to install and remove without delaminating the lights.

Can't the headlights be sanded back and clear coated if there was damage from film removal ?

What would you rather have? A headlight that might need to be re-clearcoated, or a damaged headlight that needs to be replaced?

Dunno about you but I'll take the former.

Had my 14 lights done and looked perfect after 18k miles and several SmokiesGT trips following close. Did the lights on my 18 also. I would rather do them and take the chance that when I pull the film off than damage from stones.

The reason I did not PPF mine is not because of the risk mentioned, but because it says explicitly in the manual that no film should be applied to the headlights. More of a heat issue than anything else I think.

There is an infamous post from a few years ago of paint protection film/clear bra being removed from the headlights of a 991.1 car, delaminating the top UV layer of the plastic headlights from the bottom layer of plastic. What no one talks about is that the film, when taken off properly (with a steamer or heat gun) should not cause these issues.

You have to weigh your options: wrap the headlights from new and take a small risk of delamination years down the road when the film is removed, or choose not to wrap the headlights and be assured of having damaged headlights down the road from road debris peppering the plastic lens. From there, it's a pretty easy decision for most of our customers: wrap the headlights.
