GT3 Gearing
 
Hi all, I have a 991.1 GTS and looking to move to a GT3 this year. I dislike my 7th gear (PDK), too long. I feel something a bit longer than 6th would be nice. But the GT3 (I have driven on the road but not motorway) has 7th a bit shorter than 6th, nearly between 5th and 6th on the GTS. Anyone find this a bit short for long trips on the motorway ?

No offence only trying to relay my personal review

The 991 Carrera s or 4s are entirely different machines

The 991 gt3s tranny in sport mode is remarkably aggressive in terms of shift points all be it in man or automatic mode

I drove the 991 Carrera s and was instantly bored, so much so it put me off the 991 variants

I then drove a 991 turbo s, remarkable power and acceleration. Almost too much power for me. I come from a 620hp 997 turbo

The turbo s had so much power it actually develops torque steer as the whole car struggles for grip on hard launches. Suspension was good although just not on par with the gt3s Coilover's. Porsche finally got the active suspension right! The 997 was a joke.

Bottom line - Drive a 991 Gt3 and all your concerns will vanish. I was concerned I would tire of my Gt3 quickly. Completely the opposite result though. I just want to get more seat time with it.

Hi, I didn't like the 991 S or Carrera, the GTS with SPASM/PDCC and geo with techart springs is quite different as a chassis. I drove a GT3 back to back with my GTS and would like to transition, the ride was remarkably similar in many ways.

I was just wondering if motorway speeds seems like you might be missing a gear with the GT3 ?

PS I don't intend to buy a GT3 for driving on motorways, but will however need to from time to time

Answering your specific question, yes 7th in the PDK is too short which makes it a bit too noisy, and thus annoying, when cruising long distances at 140kph and beyond. Considering that you never get into 7th even on a very long track such as Spa, I genuinely believe that Porsche could afford to make 7th a bit longer in order to make it a bit more comfortable driving long distances to the track. Same applies to 6th in the manual box.

My PDK GT3 when cruising at 75mph is running at exactly 3k revs..I agree that this is slightly too short for quiet cruising however you have to bear in mind that the engine in the GT3 revs to 9k..On top of that it really needs at least 4k revs to really perform well so overall i think the gearing suits the engine..

I love that top gear in the GT3 is geared for top speed at peak hp (8,250 rpm). And the GT3 is not geared for Spa - it’s geared for a track 100km to the East :D

agree. The lower 7th gear in the GT3 exists solely to help it achieve a higher top speed 200mph which isn’t applicable even at the Ring, only at Nardo,

i greatly prefer the lower gearing of the GT3 compared to carrera variants, other than I agree that 7th in PDK and 6th in manual on the GT3 should be longer so you could cruise at 3K RPM in 7th gear at 80mph, with less noise for long trips to various tracks or just long trips in general.

You don’t have to go 200mph to use 7th gear. You just need to exceed the speed in 6th at redline which is considerably slower than that (in PDK).

I know you need 6th gear in the Manual at the Ring and assume you could get into 7th with the PDK (but just barely). If not, it’s nice to have good high speed acceleration on the Autobahn- making top gear taller would really detract from that. These cars are not for quiet and fuel economy:)

When I get on the ramp into the highway and the GT3 upshifts through the gears (PDK), I find myself subconsciously waiting for it to shift one more time, only to realize it's already at 7th. So, yes, it does feel like the 7th gear is a tad short in that instance. However, there is the feeling of readily accessible power for a quick overtake without the need to downshift. And with the engine that revs up to 9,000 RPM, that top gear provides the power to drive through the air at top speed. The car is designed for speed, not quiet comfort. I've always said that the car is compromised as a daily driver. This "shorter" gear is an example of that compromise. And I love it.

unless you have a specific race track in mind. gearing means 1-4.
why would you ever used 5th or higher?
i have never used 5th gear in my GT3/RS variant on streets. it's boring.
just stick in in 4th and keep it 7500rpm.
the gearing is just fine.

I will stop using my 7th for a while and see how it feels on the motorway, looking at the GT3 gearing gearing at 9k in 6th is 191 and 7th 219, at 8,250 it's 175 and 200mph So in that respect it sounds quite long geared !

The Bl**dy GTS is 296mph at 7,800.... No wonder it feel flat as a pancake in that gear....

Agreed, I never see 7th gear on any of the tracks I drive !

Not sure I've ever been in 7th gear in my RS ... :P
